[h=2]Hi, I had no luck in asking this same question about a broken A23J mainspring in the PAM section, therefore I thought to re-submit it here in the technical area (hoping that, in doing so, I am not violating any forum rule. In case I did, please accept my apologies in advance)

Unfortunately, the mainspring of my PAM711 broke recently (when I try to wind the watch, it sounds like the mainspring is being put under tension then unwinding itself).

According to some TD sites (here, for example: https://puretime.io/pam718-s-xf-best...ap-p-1000.html) the base movement is Asian 23J (hand-winding)

I do not want to send the watch back to China for repairs for obvious reasons (costs, time, customs etc.) and I was wondering if it is possible to find somewhere a replacement mainspring and barrel (a local watchmaker could install them for me).

Is there any site selling compatible spare parts?

Thank you for your help![/h]

You would probably be better off just buying a new movement. Do you know exactly what movement it is? DG2813? 6497? There are plenty of decent quality inexpensive movements on ebay. You'll have to know what movement in any case.

I don’t know. It’s just defined Asian 23J, modified to look like a PAM movement. Factory replied through my dealer giving me two options: 1 - Send watch back / 2 - Buy the entire movement for 130$ plus shipping

I don’t like neither one nor the other. I’ll think about it

Can you take some clear photos of the movement, someone might be able to ID it

Here is the movement. Not much is visible, though.

The broken mainspring should be under the plaque, in the area circled in yellow

Hi, did you find out what movement this is and what were the symptoms?
I've just got a Pam574 with the same movement and it won't fully wind. It winds about 15 full turns and then the spring feels like it unwinds. It can hold about 19hours of power though.

Thanks

The type of the movement was mentioned on the TD site. Symptoms were exactly the same you experienced, indicating that the mainspring is broken. A good watchmaker can repair it, at a cost. Factories do not provide spare parts but, through your TD, you could buy a new movement. At the end of the day, this would be the cheapest solution. Instead, I sent it back to China, spending time, money and patience for an unsatisfying job and when I finally got it back (not repaired) I had to resort to a rep friendly watchmaker that costed me extra money.

Thanks. Sounds like it was frustrating but at least you got it sorted in the end.

I think I am just going to get mine repaired by a friendly watchmaker rather than sending it back to China.

Are you sure it was a broken spring? in all the watches I have ever worked on, I have never seen a broken mainspring...todays watches the mainsprings have a bridle that allows the spring to slip in the barrel in case of being overwound. I'm not saying it couldn't be the spring, it would be very rare. What movement is that? I just did a 6497 rebuild for a forum member and have an extra spring.

I would think there is something wrong with the ratchet assy first...

Specter1000 I was told there was a problem with the mainspring by more than a watchmaker, including the one who repaired it. The movement is the one mentioned in the title of this discussion: Asian 23J
