removing AP diver crown

Anyone have a good method for removing the crown from an AP diver stem? Little sucker is on real tight and with it being rubber I don't want to force it too much in case I damage it.

use a pin vice or if you not plan re-use the old stem use pliers hold stem. un-do like you unscrew lid on coke bottle

That was my original method, was on so tight could see the crown distorting, ended up heating it slightly with a soldering iron
