AP clone movement ?

Read something about somebody reading something about somebody making a clone AP movement somewhere in China for somebody on a website called watchbus or something? ????

What’s the deal?

I’m guessing it’s just wishful thinking but perhaps Chinese speaking brothers can verify?

Watchbus is just the chinese rep forum where an insider reports from time to time about novelties and stuff.

at the beginning of 2018 there was a preview on the upcoming novelties this year (especially regarding AP)

after those new introduced possible upcoming models it said "new AP movement this year"

as i've heard from some insiders here on the forum (and im not talking about repworld haha) there is an AP mvmt in the works and recently in the testing phase.

I'm pretty excited about those news as watchbus already anounced 2016 that JF is working on something. There were plenty of gen mvmt pics on watchbus (but sadly just from vintage manual AP calibres...)

additional to that - there were a couple of other "teasing posts" from this insider on watchbus regarding a "3-needle" movement as google translated.

i will post some links when i'm home.

hope this helps but as we all know no announcement in the past was very meaningful and many of them kinda disappointing... So let us take it with a grain of salt.

I was playing with a friends gen ROO Havana the other day (pic below for fun) and couldn’t help but think that the dial/hands/tachy look very close to JF (in terms of quality).


Of course gen is gen but usually with other reps models (Rolex, IWC, RO etc), there’s something about gen that “pops”......however with the 42mm gen ROOs, there’s nothing that makes them scream SUPER high premium quality over the reps.....well not to my eyes anyway.

The ROO diver bezel is really cool and visibly more crisp than Rep but the basic printed tachy’s you get on say the JF safari, bumble bee etc are virtually indistinguishable from gen to me....in terms of print quality.

If the rep factories can clone AP movement and consequently sort out the date position error and case thickness issue, then the reps would become literally too good to be true!


Apart from date position/depth....everything else looks like made by JF .....lol

I really love the Havana! Holy cow that is a stunner. On watchbus this model was announced too. So I'm hoping everyday that JF just releases this bad boy soon...

And like you said - The over all quality is really good for the price. The printing, the colors or even the finish of the shiny accents on all post-2015 ROO (reps)

If they clone the movement....and sort out the date/Cyclops.....I would literally buy all the 42mm APs at £1.5k each. Lol....better than spending £15k for one gen.

Yes, the Havana is beautiful. If they rep it, I’ll get my friend to order that strap for us....it’s the best strap I have felt on any ROO.....the strap colour is so dynamic and it’s soft as butter....much better than the horn back offerings IMO.

Yeah only speculation at the moment. But i really love the hope to see a decent clone in the future haha
even if it will release in 2021 haha

watchbus rumors are always to take with a grain of salt... and so are the „insider infos“

but as i already mentioned in the ZF RM011 waiting room thread - when ZF is abled to clone the RM11 movement they need to clone a kind of Dubois Depraz chrono/date module. And if that is the case - they will be abled to make a ROO movement with correct DW position even if the see through case back will show another base movement than a 3120 clone.
(For example an A2892 or another possible mvmt)

but thats just my thoughts as i‘m not a watchsmith nor educated in this topic i could be totally wrong.

I’ve been hearing about that clone movement for over a year now. If rumors I heard and pic I saw is correct it won’t be movement for RO nor ROO.
It will be for classic round case AP - a dress watch.
This has been discussed on this and other forums a few months ago.

I hope I’m wrong but there is nothing to be excited about.

Yes, it’s a movement for small vintage AP dress watch.

Cant imagine they would rep such a watch without any demand on it...

I mean JF is on the top so why would they invest in making such a movement? They would throw a 9015 in such a model as we all know... Dont see the point why they should do it.

there we already discussed the topic too yeah - i can imagine that they use the gen samples as samples to clone single parts like the gyromax balance wheel (if the older movements got something like this...) or to study the finish without spending 3000-4000$ on a brand new 3120 movement while developing and as usual destroying parts for better understanding of its function...

It’s not entirely a clone movement but rather an upgrade for all diver models, jf is trying to release the new diver models alongside with some significant updates like datewheel (hopefully we will see it in this year!)
