Would you spend $125 on this issue?

OK, I got this 202/A from Silix, and it was a hot special deal. The price was $145 shipped.

It was listed as a 202/A but when I looked at the case back, it is engraved as a 205/A:

So, now I see that there is a guy over on RG who is engraving these case backs. One that is correctly marked will cost me $125.

If I sell this thing, I reckon that it should to have the correct markings. Otherwise, why bother?

I welcome the PAM guys' input. Thanks!

I'm sure every people you'll meet will ask you to take off your watch and check that it is writen 201 instead of 205.

I would leave it as is. If you plan to sell, make a note in the description about the case back. Will you really get the $125 back when you sell the watch?

No dude, don't do it. Maybe $50 or something a little more reasonable, but that's too much.

No just leave it. I've been into watches for years and I don't even really know what you mean. Looks good the way it is.

It's on the back. I don't even know the difference between the number you speak of.

The gen Slytech (model 202/A in this instance) was a numbered, limited edition watch that I think sold for around $15,000. I think I saw one on the used market offered at $17,000, come to think of it. Sylvester Stallone is the endorser, of course.

The rep factories no longer make the 202/A, as near as I can tell.

I am not a PAM guy, and so wondered to what degree the PAM (rep) community valued the correct case markings.

So far, it seems, not much. Which is fine with me. For $125 I can get another complete watch!

If it's one of your most treasured, most beloved, and favourite reps, and one that you plan never to part from, then by all means throw all the money you want at it!

If it's not, don't bother.

Same here. I could discuss about sunken datewheels, canon pinions, crown guards... But when it comes to model numbers, I'm lost.

$5 says I've got a dremel tool that can fix that for you. It'll look a lot worse though I have to warn you. I wouldn't spend the $$ myself.

Also, keep in mind that the watch you bought is a PAM202 1000m Submersible, not a pre-V 5218-202/A Slytech.

The correct caseback for your model looks very different, see below:

pam202_02.jpg

It's also much thicker and sits quite a lot deeper, adding to overal 'chunkiness' of the watch.

Man, being a PAM guy seems to me like more than a hobby.

So, this is a 202, not a 202/A? I have to more research. Thanks for your help.

Correct, a 5218-202/A is a Pre-Vendome watch. It's PVD coated with a base dial that reads "Luminor Panerai" below 12 and "Marina Militare" above the 6. It's 44mm PVD coated SS and base dial, not a 47mm titanium cased automatic chrono. Nearly as different as you can get.

OK, I think it's a 202/H.

Thanks to 007, I now have a Panerai catalog.

I'll study for the test to get my Panerai card, hehe.

Wait, now. Don't get the /A confused with the series. The Pre-V watches were NOT A series. The letter series designator did not come around until after Vendome bought the brand. So your 202 is just a PAM202, even if it happens to be an H series watch. So, in summary, the model you own is a PAM202, the Pre-V watch model is 5218-202/A. The "PAM" nomenclature didn't come around until after Vendome bought the brand, as well.

Confused yet? Good! :biglaugh:
