Since I'm a bit of a film fanatic and love watching and experiencing new things I thought I'd start this thread to find out what kind of movies people on here watch and maybe your favourite movie could become someone else's if they decide to watch it.

My favourite movie by a long shot is "Lone Survivor". The true story of 4 Navy Seals who go out on a mission in Afghanistan to capture or kill a Taliban leader. There's quite a few famous actors in it and if you're into war/action movies I'd definitely recommend it!

If you get the chance you should watch Les intouchables (The intouchables). It's a french movie so obviously it's better if you watch it in french, I've never watch it english so I'm not sure about the translation quality. But the whole story is very touching. In a nutshell, a wealthy quadriplegic man's looking for a new caretaker and he end up taking a real bum who just got out of prison and really doesn't care about him, but they develop a friendship. It's also a true story if you're into that kind of thing.

I also enjoy Ben Affleck movies so.. Gone girl which is a psychological thriller, his wife dissapear and it gets a lot of press coverage and he simply seem to not care about his wife so obviously everyone's suspicious about him but her wife turns out to be a ******* psycho, not gonna spoil everything.... Weird movie, but good movie

Beware, those movies do not include heavy ass CGI and/or explosions and/or massive shooting and/or blood, etc.

The Evergreen State
Drama: Shawshank Redemption

Comedy: Caddyshack-Play It Again Sam

Silent: The Cameraman starring Buster Keaton 1928

Sci Fi: Cold Lazarus

Too many others to list

Since he is a relative of mine, I will plug Buster's movie "The General" (1926) as a classic.

"El Cid" (1961) for historic drama and Sophia Loren in her prime (Hot!). Say what you will about Heston. It is good stuff regardless.

"Bonnie and Clyde" (1967) to see Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in their prime, under fantastic direction by Arthur Penn.

"Alien" (1979) Grab the edge of your seat and wait for Sigourney Weaver's money shot. Genius Ridley Scott directs.

"Unforgiven" (1992) Clint Eastwood's masterpiece, IMO.

"Glengarry Glen Ross" (1992) For Alec Baldwin's soliloquy and a fantastic cast graced with amazing writing.

For laughs: Anything by Mel Brooks will do in a pinch. (“It’s pronounced ‘Fronkensteen.’?” ) And, of course, "Tommy Boy" (1995).

That's a few that come to mind

I've always gravitated to war movies, which is quite odd as I've always thought myself a pacifist. I don't think any movie has affected me, for good or bad, quite like Saving Private Ryan. I almost enlisted after watching it for like 10 times in a row. And this was even long before 9/11 happened. After a while, I was having dreams of being part of the Normandy invasion!

My second favorite movie is Acts of Valor featuring real Navy Seals in reenactment of real life dangerous missions. The acting was not polished, but forgivable. What ranks the movie high on my list is this poem by Native American Chief Tecumseh, spoken at the end of the movie. These are words to live by:

"So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.
Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and
Demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life,
Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and
Its purpose in the service of your people.

Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.
Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend,
Even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and
Bow to none. When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the food and
For the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks,
The fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and nothing,
For abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts
Are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes
They weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again
In a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home."

2001: A space Odyssey - Still blows my mind today
The Shining - I feel compelled to watch it every 6 months and always get something new out of it. Jack so deserved the Oscar, but wasn't even nominated
A New Hope - the original Star Wars and the best scifi
Groundhog Day. Classic Bill Murray and Harold Ramis
Ghostbusters. First film I ever saw at the cinema. Still stands up today
Blues Brothers. Akroyd and Belushi had such great chemistry
Jaws. Can't stop watching it if I see it on tv
The Vidiot from UHF. Why hasn't Weird Al made more movies? So funny
Raiders of the Lost Arc. Best action movie ever. That scene in the temple where he puts the medallion on the staff and the sun shows the location of the arc of the covenant is one of my all time favourite scenes.
Citizen Kane. Best cinematography I've ever seen

Same here, the first time I saw it in a cinema, I felt like I was on the battlefield, the sound effects, the camera movements, everything felt so real. I could not move for the first 45 minutes, too intense! What a movie!

1/ Saving Private Ryan
2/ Seven
3/ The green Mile
4/ The Goodfellas
5/Scarface

Some brilliant movies being mentioned here by everyone, One thing I've noticed is a pattern that everyone has mentioned atleast one movie which is early 2000's or before which is interesting considering how much CGI and visual effects have improved since then.

CGI is cool, but I'd prefer good acting, directing, cinematography, script writing, dialogue or even sound over special effects.

So many good cheesy 80's/90's action movies to chose from though...
Arnie's are always the best... Running Man, Total Recall... God I want to have a movie marathon tonight now.
