Whats the difference?

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum as well as replica watches and I want to purchase a PAM196. This might seem like a stupid question to most, but since I'm new I guess I'm allowed a few. I want to know what the difference is between an Asian movement and a Swiss movement. I notice the big difference in price, but why? I appreciate all replies.

Thanks

Well I'm not a Pam guy but I do know a little about movements.

Obviously an asian movement is made in asia while a swiss movement is made in switzerland, but understand that all rep watches are made in asia no matter what movement is inside the watch.
Swiss movements are more expensive because the are more reliable and can be serviced by a watchsmith while most asian movements cannot.
Some asian movments last a very long time, sometimes they don't but a swiss movement is pretty much guaranteed to last and is servicable.

Thanks for that. I now see the obvious benefits of the swiss movement compared to the asian. These are pretty big price differences though. If I do purchase a swiss movement rep. How can I tell if I actually have a swiss movement and not asian? Is this something that is obvious by looking at the hands move?

The only way to be positive, is to open the case of the watch and look for the swiss markers on the movement.

However, if you are buying from one of the guys on this site and they say it is swiss, it's swiss. I know that sounds like a plug or something, but it is the truth.

BTW: Ask as many questions as you want. It is refreshing to see someone want a little knowledge before they jump off the bridge. :D

The asian 7750 isn't a bad movement really, unless it is in a modified Rolex Daytona and we don't even want to start that discussion.

Just made the order

I appreciate all of the replies on this topic. I have just ordered a Pam 196 Daylight Chrono Asian 7750 from Joshua and will be sharing pics when I receive it. I also purchased a GMT Master II SS Black/Red Bezel Swiss Eta 2836-2 from him. Once again thanks for all who replied, you made me feel more comfortable with my decision on the Pam 196

If you like the 196 check out a 212 it comes in both a manual wind lemania and the asian 7750 automatic. Both are stunning

Not always!! >>>

.

As you're probably aware, one of the newer dealers, named after a region of China famous for spicy foods, has been peddling some real "canal st." grade stuff and representing it as ETA movements!!..Have you EVER seen a 2836-2 WITHOUT a wishbone regulator??...I HAVE!!!..I didn't get it directly from him but my seller did, and innocently sold it as an ETA EX1....For instance: This watch is stamped 18K on one lug, the caseback has the LEGENDARY "Gelena Shitinerand" stamped inside the case back, and the dial simply says Swiss, not Swiss Made at the 6 o'click position!!...The Movement is CLEARLY stamped 2836-2 beneath the balance wheel but it definitely AIN'T one!!

Frank do you have a picture of that Chinese fake 2836?
I would like to add it to my "how to spot a real swiss movement" thread!
or you can post it in the thread in the repair section too if you like!

I don't think you will see too much of that kind of behavior becasue it diminishes faith in the rep industry as a whole, not good for business!

Enzo
that is remarkable!

The adjuster is a big red flag but I could look at that several times before I noticed it!

I immediatly noticed the pallet bridge was not gold plated too which you wouldn't see from ETA either...

I would have to say looking at it that its too good a copy to not be made from swiss parts for the most part or maybe swiss tooling?

It certainly warrants putting it on the show and tell shelf!

I hope you don't mind, I put your picture in the topic I started about identifing movements... If you don't want me eating your bandwidth let me know I'll drop it!

Well like you say its better than some of the other movements out there!

I would still like to get a picture of that really phony one that was in the omega in the for sale section. had the 7750 shaped rotor, was clearly not ETA but still had the 2836-2 model number stamped in it!

Enzo, correct me if I'm wrong cuz i am not sure, I think what you have there is one of the 2824-2 without the adjuster.

well it has an adjuster just not the correct one even for an older model...
