It accelerates for you so you can get it over with and not suffer or anything like that. Instant death! Volvo FTW!!

The 2001 Ford van that rear-ended me in November of last year had the exact same accident avoidance system. Volvo is WAY behind the curve on this technology!

my friend has a new s60 and it works sort of ?? you have to be going no more than 15-20 ish .mph for it to work .so its only really for in town traffic driving............. its funny seeing them **** it up in front of the press ..... I bet it was because of the high back of the trailer the sensors didn't read it like it would have read a car ................ I drive a Volvo V50 my wife was in a bad high speed accident in the first one we had she was doing about 55mph on the highway (motorway) and some nutter going well over 70mph rear ended the Volvo .what a mess a real mess .the car went for a triple salco with a double spin before hitting another car in front .........
my wife only suffered some bruising/minor cuts and shock when the seatbelt pre tensioners fired .she had to be cut out and the fire-brigade had problems as the steel inside the body of the Volvo was so strong they found it difficult using the equipment they had .......... suffice to say the had to upgrade the cutting heads to deal with the volvos strong defences .........the also pointed out she would have certainty have been killed if she was in a virtually any other car ............... now she would not drive anything else but the Volvo ................

According to a "spokesperson" at Volvo. the system failed "due to a battery problem" they went on to say that if there had been a driver in the car they would have noticed the problem. Hmmmm
Having said that having owned several Volvos - I am somewhat willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. I did at one time t-bone a guy who fell asleep at the wheel, he drove through an intersection in Manhattan. I was in a Volvo, walked away with a sore shoulder from the seatbelt. The EMS guys were amazed that I was OK. The other guy was fine too - being asleep when it happened he just got tossed around in the car - not wearing a belt.
