The Radiomir Design since 1936 is Probaly One of the most Interesting Historical watches, As the First Purpose Produced Divers Watch, Develloped from Rolex's first waterproof Production watches the 1920's Oyster Design(For A Rich Sheik who Wanted to be able to leave on his Rolex while taking A dip in his Pool)

1920's Rolex Oyster With Rolex Patent (Brevet) Crown and Screwback plate.

The 2533 Prototype was made in 1936 Oyster Shaped Cushion Case and Rolex Crown.

With Skeleton Back!

A Rolex license produced Cortebért Pocketwatch movement was installed, The first production Also Used the Rolex Oyster Designed "California"Dial 1936,

Till this time the 3646 was Bassicly A Rolex Liasoned By Officine Panerai to the Italian Royal Navy 'Regia Marina'. The (Then) Panerai Familly business Had good ties with the Navy Wich soon became A Axis Enemy to The British. Rolex As A British Co. was in A precair situation. Through their (Neutral) Swiss Factory and Panerai the Watches would be suplied to Both Italian and German Navys (Money makes the world go round)
Panerai became A Historical Instruments Shop by suplying Almost All of the Equipment for that one Italian Commando Flotilla who develloped Underwater Combat Against the Allies that would inspire them to do likewise with; US UDT, Navy Seals, Royal Navy SBS and Royal Marine Commandos.
After the War Rolex Denied suplying the Axis, And helped them in blowing up Ships from Rolex's other client, The British Royal Navy! (15 years Later Rolex would Devellop The Submariner for the Royal Navy)

Panerai's First real input into the Radiomir was to produce the Sandwich Dial. Easy to read even underwater and in the dark, Becuase of Guido Panerai's patented Radiomir Radium Lume, It's Huge Size And Spartan (timless) design.

After A lot of naging from the Paneristi Comunity OP gave in to (Some) of their wishes to Re-produce The Vintage Radiomir, 47mm Special Editions series 2006;
1936 units Of the Pam249 California Dial,

Nice Vintage Bleu Hands Perspex Crystal

For Comparisson the Vintage 3646 Rolex Dial Symbol lume is filled in ingravings it seems, The Minute Ring is in Gold and contrasts the White Lume The text is "Swiss Made" In contrast to the Pam249's "L Swiss Made L" "California Might be left off on Production models.

1938 pieces Of Pam232 With Panerai Sandwich Dial,

and 50 exlusive White Gold Pam262's with Tabacco Cali Dial.

Actually the Limeted Edition PAM00021 from 1997 A 47mm Le Re-edition of 60 with the Genuine Rolex Cal.618, Altough in Platinum and Croc Tapering Strap is A much better Replica of the Vintage then the new Pam SE Radiomir series!

1997 Pam21 Left, 1940's 3646 Marina Militare on the Right.

The New Watches use Basicly A enlarged Pam210-183 Case, With removable Wire lugs, The Thinner (Saphire) Crystal, Bezel, Backplate and fatter Case-Body, Compared to the Vintage 3646.
The movement is the Standard ETA/Unitas 6497.

Left The Pam232 The Gold Hands are to Small for the Big Dial! Wire lugs are removable Bend A bit squarish_On the right The Vintage 3646 Perfect propertioned Long Minute, And Fat Hour Hands!, The Wire lugs Are welded, rounder and follow the body shape. Note Also It's Thicker Sandwich Dial at the Cut-outs.

Pam232 on top Thinner Saphire, Bezel & Backplate Fat body_3646 High Plexiglass, Fat Bezel & Backplate Thin Oyster Case-body Total thicknes is simular for watches.

I could go in-depth on the differences Between the 3646, Pam323 and their Reps.
But I think that would be better for A seperate topic.

Tropic Out!

Actualy, I credited Guido Panerai For the Radiomir Lume Patent.
It was infact Invented by The Regia Marina Officer Capitano Carlo Ronconi, A relation To the Panerai Family Workshop.
He Joined The Company in 1915, But Sold his shares to Guido two Years later, The Radiomir Lume A mix of Poshorous Zinc, Radium and Mesothorium, Was kepth As Powder in Glass tubes Giving A much Brighter glow then the usual aplied paint. Used In Naval Gun-sights these where known as Ronconi shights.
The Patent by the Firenze workshop, Would launch the family business from A Small Swiss Pocket watch Shop, To A Business Holding world Patents and Producing All sorts of specialized Navy equipment, that thanks to the use of Radiomir lume Could be used at night, Or A darkened ships bridge.

Guiseppe Panerai (1903-1975) Is credited to have designed the Radiomir and Luminor Designs 1930's watches.
I would say he took part in the Re-design Of the Dial and later the Panerai Patented Crown Guard, In the watch That had so many Rolex Parts, Patents and inovations.
Because Of Panerais strong ties With the Italian Navy an As A Italian based Swiss watch dealer they where the perfect Liason Company for Rolex.
The Panerai Sandwich Dial mimicks the method of Ronconi's Glass tubes By Sandwiching A thick Powder Coat Mixture between Two metal plates, Showing The Lume only through Transparant plastic filled Cutouts.
The later 'Luminor' Lume was A Non-Radioactive mixture.

BTW, Might Panerai's "Orlogeria Svizzera" Shop specialized in Swiss Pocket watches have sold this Rolex familiar shaped Pocket watch?

Lets Put some Wire lugs and A Strap On that!
