The IQ Test

I have a pretty high IQ (No jokes please). Anyway I was surfing around the web and came across some stuff on IQ tests. I thought hey this would be neat. Haven't taken one of these in years. So I start clicking through the questions. When I got to the end I clicked on 'Find out my score'. But I didn't get a score. I got a screen asking for my personal information and email where they would 'send the results' to me. Being the researcher I am I looked at 10 other testing sites and they are all the same way. As I sat there and thhought about how I have never failed to be spammed whenever I give my email out to an unknown site, I realized what the test of intelligence really was. So I closed it out and moved on.

I guess the fact that you did NOT supply your personal information means that you passed the IQ test. :D

Why don't you just set up a bull hotmail or gmail account for this kind of stuff?

Hey aren't you the one who looked up another 10 IQ sites?? :D

But seriously, it's a good idea to set up a hotmail/gmail/etc account that you can use for all those kinds of situations. If you hardly ever use it, just log in once every couple of months or so to keep it alive. I find that I use mine every now and then. And whenever I log in I find hundreds of new messages from online pharmacies, rep shops (including some of those on your list), etc...

You can join the International High IQ Society for free if you score above normal (95th percentile, I believe, and you can actually still do the tests for free!)... I'm a lifetime member. Otherwise you got TOPS (Top One Percent) that used to be almost free (but not as active, as I recall) or TNS (Triple Nine Society (99.9th percentile, which accepted a number of the major tests, even if taken over 20 years ago!). As an adult (or ever since I would have had to pay for it), I always refused to pay for any IQ tests... Mensa is the one that bugs me the most with that... and it's not like they're Mega, or even Prometheus! They require 98th percentile but make it sound like you need to be in Giga!).

Anyway, I used to like Int'l Hi IQ Society the best... but I haven't been active for a few years.

How accurate is an online IQ test??

I know when I was 11 or 12 I had my IQ test done by my psychologist, well if I remember right he did not do it but someone came to his office and administered the test. IIRC I had two scores one was a bit higher than the other, I will have to try and dig up the papers.

Just out of curiosity, what score are you guys considering high?

It all relative... think of standardized tests...

90th percentile is 1/10... is that high? With no massive gap, a 90th percentile SAT gets you in any school you want

95th percentile is 1/20... is that high?

99th percentile is 1/100... is that high?

99.98th percentile is 2/10'000... is that high?

99.999 is 1/100'000... now that's definitely high, no?

My $.02 (...although looking at it, it may not be worth $.01!)

By triangulation, you can get a good assessment of your IQ with online tests... but professional testing remains what many high IQ societies require. However, no single test is really perfect in my opinion... despite what the IQ test companies that sell them may try to argue... and in truth as in any testing: the map is never the terrain.

Sorry but I'm a firm believer that IQ tests are complete rubbish. I can assess someone's intelligence more accurately by sharing a few beers with them on a Friday night...

Para.. I joined the International High IQ Society when I was a senior in high school as a good way to get my foot in the door @ my current college.
Used that + sat scores.

I was actually on their site a little while ago - few months ago..
and I think since I joined... they have become more lax / maybe... more into getting $ then being an exclusive club.

I say that because some of the test results were... er.. well better then they should have been for myself and a few of my friends who took them.

anyways still looks good on the resume :)

No need to be sorry... you're not the first person to voice that sentiment. I think some IQ tests are not without scientific merit; no test is bias-free but we have gone a long way since Binet. Now, if you had argued that IQ test scores are not predictive of a whole lot and thus have limited actual value, I would tend to agree that the jury is definitely still out on that... despite what those who "swear by IQ tests" want to argue!

As for the beer-sharing method, I've met a few guys who get pretty smart after a few beers, do you take that in consideration in your assessment? Last, if you're paying, when can I be tested?

7th: I didn't know that... I have not been active on it for the last 6yrs or so... that's disappointing... but, hey, there are few places left with people immune to the draw of more cash in their pockets, so this shouldn't be surprising.

Ok, I should have clarified. By rubbish I meant predictive or indicative of nothing useful. I emphasise "useful". And to be frank, I tend to see IQ scores as a liability on a CV, as anyone I have ever interviewed or assessed who mentioned an IQ test was usually just trying to divert attention from the fact that the CV lacked substance. In a way, my point was that a better indicator of someone's "intelligence" is perhaps their actions and achievements, as well as their behaviour in a setting that is not controlled. Also, sadly many so-called intelligent people have a complete lack of emotional intelligence. And who's to say which type of intelligence is best or deserves being measured? At best an IQ test is just as useful as a GMAT or similar tests. You can cram for them and improve your score. But I need to be convinced that they say anything about a person's actual intelligence. But perhaps the issue is merely definitional here? I.e., what do we mean by intelligence?

I agree with you on that one. I know some pretty smart people who lack social and emotional skills as well as a few that are lacking in common sense. On the other hand I know alot of people who never made it out of High School that have made it pretty far in the buisiness world so far.

I think IQ is more like bench racing with dyno numbers. You can have a 100hp advantage on the guy lined up next to you, but if he can hook and you can't he will get to the end of the track before you every time.
