I would like to know what everyone thinks about Stingray straps. I got one for my Slytech and it really looks sharp, Oris has put one on it's Sinatra model so maybe it's making a comeback. I really like the look. Here it is :D

I have purchased one week ago, one from HKTAN in red Maroon for my g/f gen Longines. I must say that the texture in your photo looks really good. :D

I'm dead against them. :(

I'll wear shark, cow, camel, cock, etc., but I'll never knowingly wear croc, snake or ray. I like rays and think they're cool fish and I'd hate to think that one was killed to give me a strap. Now, if it was something I ate, I'd wear it.

ps. I don't eat Camel, I just hate the bastards. :D

Why? If it doesn't bother you, I'm not going to judge you. I'm not the kind to get annoyed at your life choices in this instance. :D

I live in France, people here eat frogs and horses and they would probably eat stingrays and crocodiles if they were served near raw in a bearnaise sauce.

I cant see them farming them specially for the straps
do you not think the use for straps etc is not just the byproduct of
them being killed for something else , maybe food ,
I wouldnt like to eat one though there would be no room on the
plate for the chips. :)

They are primarily fished for their skins, I'm afraid. There's a large enough industry of wallet and shoe manufacturers that use Stingray to justify it.

Serving them as food in Asia (mostly dried or their cheeks) is a side effect of killing them for their skin.

Alligator is excellent to eat!!!!! And they are farm raised just like cows. But I don't think I would want to walk among them throwing out hay at feeding time!!!!!!!
So most skins do not come from wild Gators that are poached by bad guys [smilie=evil7.gif]

There are lots of FISH leathers out there that are great and not being used, one I can think right off is the American Catfish. It's and edible, it's farmed, and often noxious species waiting to be eradicated and the skin is like Kevlar, that would make an excellent strap leather that would be waterproof and durable - but the marketing is lacking -
There's some amazing tanned Salmon, too. You can get some gorgeous blue salmon leather, but it's not really catching on.

See, I'd wear fish leather, especially something like salmon.

Personally I have always been a big fan of Kangaroo leather. It is increadibly soft and when done right makes a wonderful piece of leather.

I like ray leather because it is so tuff, but all the pieces I have had are not very plyable. The straps I have had do not bend really well and I usually leave them on a stand for a few days to get the proper wrist shape to them.

Have a look at the strap-leather list on the ABP website: http://www.abp-paris.com/ Just pick the species of your choice :D

Don't worry. The French ate the rest of the animal.

To be serious... the stingray is not an endangered species. Sharks are under threat because of the ludicrous prices that their fins command.
