Well, the rep strap isn't that bad actually. I used some shoe polish on it, and now it pretty much looks the same as the gen to me.
Try it, you'll be amazed how big a difference some shoeshine cream makes! If you're still not pleased, there's a nice genuine alligator strap on ebay:
