What exactly is the sandwich dial? Are the non sandwich dials a darker color. (i.e. comparing a black sandwich dial to a black non sandwich dial?

A sandwich dial is comprised of two parts, the top part is the black dial with the printed tags and the cutouts of numbers and hourly hash marks and the luminated disc placed underneath that dial so that at night, the lume lights up through the top dial's cut outs. Take a look at the Pam 1950, 111h, etc. they all have "sandwich" dials.

sandwich dial is a two layer dial. The top layer has the numbers and hour markers carved out. The second layer sets under the top dial and is the white layer that you see through the top dial.
