One of the two men accused of murdering Lee Rigby has been hurt in a jail bust-up.
Michael Adebolajo, 28, is said to have lost two teeth during a violent confrontation at high-security Belmarsh prison.
A number of prison officers are also thought to have been injured in the fracas on the segregation wing of the South East London jail.
They are believed to have told bosses they were using standard restraining techniques.
Police will interview Adebolajo along with all of the warders involved. They will also be examining CCTV footage from inside the prison.
Steve Gillan, general secretary of the Prison Officers Association, confirmed that Adebolajo had made allegations of assault – which he said were strongly denied.
He said: “We believe the prison officers did a professional job on behalf of ordinary members of the public and we will be supporting our members involved in this incident.â€
It emerged that if Adebolajo can prove he suffered injuries that could have been prevented he could claim for up to £20,000 compensation.
The prison service has a duty of care to all inmates and the Ministry of Justice pays out a fortune each year to injured prisoners.
Former prison governor Carlton Boyce said: “It is entirely possible that he will try to take action.
"Suing the prison service seems to be the default position for prisoners.â€
