I threw a baseball to my son and my watch just stopped working. Damn! I purchased a new movement off of the bay and it came with a nice dial so I decided to use it. Now I'm going to have to build another watch so I use the other dial I have.:picard2:

Currently in the same obsession. Built this Rolerai with a movement I pulled from a Colibri pocket watch.

Currently working on putting these 2 together into something. Still need to finish painting and luming the dial.

I was bidding on this. Wanted to just recase as a wristwatch but it got sniped from me last second on eBay. Desperately searching for another similar chronograph. I love the look of the dial.

I've also decided 3 people are getting converted pocket watches for Christmas. :D

Im really digging that Waltham dial. I totally know what you mean. You like the dial from this one but needs a different movement, now you need to use the movement for another watch, oh crap now that leaves this beautiful dial without a home, its an endless cycle.

Very nice build MG. These old watches have history and it's nice to put them back in circulation and get them going again. You will need to post pics once you have them assembled.

Thanks for sharing the link! Yes, I have seen those and have thought about buying one for one for a build.

I have always been amazed by these builds. I always wanted to try it myself but dont even know where to begin. Perhaps some of you guys might answer some of my questions so i can try a built for myself.

- Where do you start to find a movement, ebay, other source?
- Do you look for movements with crown at 3 oclock position? i see so many pocket watches with crown at 12
- How do you match up movement to a case, i.e how do you know what movement will fit a particular case?
- How do you know if the movement is working (Are we just trusting the ebay sellers here?)
- Can any hands fit the movement, or do you need to find specific hands, if so how do i find out which hands fit.
- What about the crown, and the crown tube, i am assuming these are not universal and there need to be some kind of adjustments or how do you attach the crown to the actual crown thread that fits the movement.

I am sure i have a lot more questions and this seems like it would distract from this thread, so to avoid thread crapping, can one of you fine gentleman please PM me, i would really like to try this out for myself, have been dreaming of getting hands on with this hobby for a while. I would really appreciate some noob creation guidance :) thanks so much!

Ebay is a good source. There are plenty of ST36 (6497/8 clones) movements available and they are relatively inexpensive and easy to get along with a case that they will fit into. I would start with the simplest route this way because getting a dial and case to fit this particular movement is easy. If your are wanting to make a watch specifically with a pocket watch movement I would check out the Homage Forum, lots of tips and helps from the guys who are good at building these.

In my particular case I found a size 10 dial with no seconds hand and it fit perfectly onto a rep movement. Not much help here but good luck. It's rewarding to make your own and have a watch that no one else has :acne:

Hey Rusk,
all of the movements I have purchased so far have been from ebay. I have trusted the seller in all cases and have not been disappointed, fingers crossed. Homage Forums is a great resource for these builds like Cybee mentioned. Depending on how in depth you want to get, there are a lot of plug and play options out there. Most 64xx movements fit in Pam or Big Pilot cases. If you use 64xx movement there are many dials, hands and stem etc. This is fun because you can mix and match to your liking. If you want to get a little more daring, you can use a cortebert, Hamilton and moljina movement and with very minor tweaking it will work.(mostly stem modification). If you do anything other than what I have mentioned, a lot of research is needed to make sure everything will be compatible.

You are not hijacking the thread...please post questions here so we can learn.

Great pics Jeff. That Hammie movement is a beauty and a no brainer with a display caseback. Plus you can brush up on your multiplication tables while you are working

Already started another thread about my latest build before I remember this one but still wanted to keep this thread alive.

Movement is a 6498 from a vintage Chalet pocket watch. Dial is from HF member daytona, self painted and polished. Case from ofrei.

Thanks! Got the raw brass dial from Daytona over at HF. Was going to go with black base and rose gold fill at first but at the end all of a sudden decided to try something different and just polish the raw brass.
