Please help me finding a "test drive pam"

Hi guys,

ever since I started on my new job earlier this year, the Panerai(s) of one of my collegues are growing and growing on me. I don’t even really like big watches – usually – but there’s just something about the overall look of the Panerai that makes me want one.

I might be able to scrap together the money for a gen over a certain amount of time, however I’d like to “test drive†the feeling of wearing one for a while before shilling out THAT amount of cash for a watch.

So, in short the watch has to be as close to the real deal to fool myself into believing it’s a gen. I can be EXTREMELY “detail oriented†(to put it nicely) when it comes to such things as finding small flaws and I know that they’ll start bothering me after a short period of time, so in order to feel good during the “test drive†it is very important to have a rep that is as close to the gen as humanly possible.

I see that some of you guys have modded your reps and I’m deeply impressed on how much closer the end results are to the actual gen. However, knowing myself, if I had to do so myself, I’d start reading books about how to repair watches, then take the rep apart completely and basicly rebuilt it from scratch – which would take me years. So that’s not really an option.

Now I hope that you guys can help me with finding the best rep for my purposes. Since I live in Germany, it would be important that I can get the watch from someone here in Europe. I’d be MORE than happy, if one of the expert modders is willing to give the watch a full “pimping†and then to sell it to me.

Here’s my wish list:

Steel case Luminor or 1950 steel case
Automatic movement with auth. look
Sapphire glass bottom
Sandwich dial (preferable tobacco brown)
Seconds
Date
NO magnifying over the date
Flat sapphire crystal
So water proof, that I can wear it when swimming

Ok, ok: I’m VERY well aware, that “get a gen†would be the easiest way to go and I’m not saying, that the rep needs to feature ALL of the specs. above. Just listing what I like. For example, I think this one is EXTREMELY nice: http://www.replicame.com/images/uploads/panerai/luminor/panerai-luminor-29100-1-replicame.jpg However I don’t know the seller, I doubt that a good rep can be had for that price and I don’t know if I can simply exchange the back with a glass version (since the movement isn’t shown).

Well, that sums it all up I guess and I hope you guys are willing to help me out.

Thanks,

Marc

LOL That one looks EXTREMELY nice because it is a picture of a gen. Rule #1 RUN AWAY from any replica site using genuine photos. There is a reason they're not showing you a picture of the watch that will, if you're lucky, eventually ship to you. If you're unlucky, you won't get anything at all.

If you are very detail oriented, I would suggest getting a good quality homage, instead of a rep. They all have flaws and it sounds like they will bother you sooner rather than later.

I would talk to Davidsen or vaccum about building an homage watch for you.

if you want a decent "test drive" watch you will need too spend some $

I would just sudgest a luminor of some sort

but yes as hooligan said, a vacuum built or davidsen built one will be very good

 Any questions why I came here LOL

No no, I'd really like to get a rep over a hommage. I'm well aware that they all have flaws one way or the other and I'm ok with that. I just want a rep that even YOU guys would say "now THAT is a sweat rep there - very close" to.

Preferable without spending years of modding myself (which would be no good anyway).

I read that DSN has a good reputation here. So, something like a "modded to death DSN" or alike from a trustworthy member, who can get it to Germany and I'm a VERY happy camper.

Thanks,

Marc

Ok, so what exactly is "some $" to you?

Do vacuum and davidsen (that is DSN, right?) offer modding and what about shipping to Germany?

Thanks for your help guys!!!

Best,

Marc

Mate, Pams have no upper limit. A top Pam can be in excess of a grand easy. A good half way point would be one of Time4direct's models with swan neck regulator and cannon pin fix for under 300 dollars and a decent strap from the likes of Bob Bean or TC. Have a look thru T4D's section for some pics and info on his Pams.

Learned something new again: I thought that a non gold rep above 1k would be rip off.

As for pricing... hmmm... I'd say up to 500€ (approx. 675$) is ok for me, however I wanna make sure the watch is worth it - hence I registered here *hint*

Regarding the strap, I'll either get one from www.maddog-straps.com or make an ammo-strap myself, so I couldn't care less for that.

So, what's next?

Thanks,

Marc

There are, currently, no good reps of any auto/sandwich dial PAMs, not even sure there are gen auto PAMs with tobacco sandwich dials, though with all the new models in the past two years there may well be. Also, *most* auto PAMs have steel case backs. You'll have to adjust your criteria a bit.

Ok, so perhaps it's better trying the other way around and starting out with a few details and then to chose the options from there.

Let's see...

44mm steel case (Luminor or 1950)
Good automatic movements with engravings
"See through" back

What would you suggest?

Thanks again,

Marc

Nothing?

- No trusted dealer who can offer an automatic movement with a see through back?

Marc

My friend, nobody here will give an answer or the best solution if you will not invest your time and patience.
Any suggestions online are worthless unless you have a watch in front of you. Then you make decision, is it good enough for ya or not.
If you do not have patience for seeking (which is a part of the process), so the only option is go to official panerai dealer boutique and buy a gen.

out of topic:
very nice straps from maddog. thanks for sharing us.

Thank you for being so friendly with me gelyte.

I didn't mean to come off as being impatient or as if I wouldn't appreciate your help. I do!!!

I just don't know where to start and I feel pretty confused with all the possibilities out there... and also - to be honest - I want to make sure that customs won't take away the watch when crossing the border.

I've read through most of Vaccum's posts - that guy is just STUNNING! Awesome work. I couldn't find any automatic movements on his mods though...

Just a little guidance, like "hey, I'm from Germany too, here's what I did, this is my watch and these could be improved" - this would mean SO much to me.

Thanks,

Marc

if you wanna panerai, so go ahead and choose vacuum or dsn. they're two best makers out of the box panerai. and if you stick with them, you'll have no worries with customs. for sure no worries about any mods too.
all the best, mate

I don't classify your wish list as a test drive model. No wonder you're confused.

Hmmmm, the display back is what is killing you here.

If you have to have a display back, I would recommend the current "Ultimate" PAM212 chrono (though I'm not sure if you're after a chrono). Almost all of our trusted dealer can get it for you, but Hont, Ruby or Trevor can probably get you the best price. Perhaps MReplica can, as well?

Good luck!

@Fakes - I believe he means the rep will be a "test drive" for buying a gen.

Sounds like you are looking for something similar to a Panerai 312 (1950 case, auto, date, no date mag, display caseback), unfortunately, no one has made a decent rep of this watch yet.

Yes, yes! That's what I was talking about. A test drive PAM before spending so much cash on a gen, without knowing if I still like it several months down the road.

If you have to have a display back, I would recommend the current "Ultimate" PAM212 chrono (though I'm not sure if you're after a chrono).

I prefer the more simple watches to be honest... I've seen reps of the 212 that look very nice (except from the crystal and a few other minor details). So I figured, that if the OP XIX movement can be replicated, the OP III should be the lesser problem... After all the OP XIX seems to have more complications than the OP III movement, no?

how about a highly modded 111h the dial is still not accurate but it is not that bad.

SWEEEET!!! Now... ummmm... can it be had with an autom. movement as well? PLEASE!!!:ahw:

To be honest, that's the one of the Panerais from my collegue I like the most. Yes. However since I couldn't find it repped anywhere, I'm moving away that idea, so I'm down to steel, automatic and glass back.

Ummm... could the 212 rep movement be modded to fit a non chrono and still look great? - Just asking.

Thanks for your help guys,

Marc
