The Hellmans Mayonaisse Company of London has been around for over 100 years, and back when they started, the President
of Mexico was visiting England and tasted mayonaisse for the first time, loved it and brought back many cases of the condiment to Mexico, where it became a treasured side dish and staple.
The largest order of Mayonaisse, 10,000 cases was shipped to Mexico from Southhampton, England in the spring of 1914.
Midway across the Atlantic the ship carrying the Mayonaisse struck an iceberg and sank after 2 & 1/2 hours. This ship in question was of course the Titanic, and it's precious cargo was lost forever.
When news of the tragedy reached the people of Mexico, there was great lamenting and national mourning. In fact, to honor the date that this accident occurred, the Govt. of Mexico proclaimed for all time a holiday on this date to be called, "Sinko De Mayo" 8)
