Hi,

Can you guys tell me judging from this pic.

it is a china made copy 6497 or unitas swiss made 6497?

one member of this fourm claimed that his local watch smith has identified this movt is a china made copy.

while another say that this sis a geunie swiss made 6497

What do you think??

Swiss Made original... Familiar looking balance wheel (Swiss used straight support bar while Chinese is slightly curved). Shape of gear tooth also Swiss (smaller, deeper).

I agree Swiss as well - eventhough gears aren't beveled.

Yep, it is swiss. The teeth on the center wheel are far too big to be a CN movement.

The teeth on the chinese version are tiny

As I post this the results are 50/50. I voted for china because the gears aren't beveled. All the swiss movements I have seen so far in photos of the rep watches have beveled gears.

well,

it is a real swiss unitas indeed.

the major difference between swiss and chinese movt are the bigger wheel and biger teeth indeed.

All memmbers who made reply are correct.

But there are still 45% vote for china copy.Thos who vote for china copy should pay more attetnion to
distringuish the deffernce between cn and swiss movt.

Another issue is that sapphire and minerial glass.

How do you tell the differende between a real sapphire and a minerial glass especially the 1950 .
I heard lots of complaints on that issue too.

I am trying to draw attetnion of some new memmbers who are not familair witht hese 2 issues.
Pls show us your ways or tips to to tell the differnce witout using any tester.

@davidsen: tapping with fingernail method works the best... I has never failed me so far (A friend of mine has hardness tester, the sapphire should score very high and I have confirmed with that device).

Sapphire should sound deeper "TUK" and glass will be louder "TICK".

I only know of three tests for crystal... The first is ask the dealer..... :wink: :shock: Not always the best method.

#2 would be the fingernail test. Saphire and mineral make very distictive sounds when tapped with finger nail. This test takes a little experience to hear the difference. But saphire will make a higer picthed sound, mineral a duller sound.

# water test... put a drop of water on the crystal... saphire should bead like on a freshly waxed car, mineral tends to be a flatter spread out drop....

Of course I'm probably completely wrong..... :shock: But someone needed to start.... :wink:

I may sound very stupid for saying this but....

I've tested this method with many of my Gen and reps and i'm quite certain of this test cum results.

Take a mineral glass watch and one with sapphire. Touch your chin with the glass(one at the time) and you'll realise that that Gen sapphire always feels much cooler than mineral. ITS TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whether in normal room temperature or a hot sunny day the sapphire will feel much cooler than the mineral!

Test it now guys and post your findings here!!!!

Try it and you'll be suprise that Gen sapphire actually feels much cooler than mineral!!

At least i didn't tell you to test it on your nips!! LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!
