Is it just me or am I totally wrong?

Well the title of the thread tells it all at the moment

I've been reading the Panerai sub forum now for a few weeks and looked at a bunch of pictures trying to decide what to buy that doesnt set me back $1000. What surprizes me is the people spend a lot of money modding watches with CG, AR etc. (details you only see from upclose) however the somehow dont pay attention to the distortion the crystal most of the time has and which can be spotted sometimes from miles away (so to say). The gen's I have seen dont have this distortion.

That brings me back to the title of the thread: Is it just me or am I totally wrong???

In the rep world, people intend to focus their attention on certain things, probably because they are easier to modify than others.

As for the crystal exemple, reps won't usually fit gen crystals, they will fit thinner ones, and thinner crystals are usually low quality.

if it is the history models like 111,112,177,176... There is crystal distortion in the gen as the crystal is dome.

so my question is the same as hooli, what distortion are you talking about.

I'm like "Officine Panerai", and they're all "Often Seen Panic Who What?"

I like my Panerai sandwiches pressed. ;)

Just looked at paneristi to get some specific examples but what about the 000, 005, 28, 111, 114. Just look at the wristshots on the what are you wearing today topics and compare. I think most of them are flat crystals, and I agree 1950 is different. But again it just could be me....

The Historics are *very* slightly domed, they are not perfectly flat crystals (neither rep, nor gen). I'm still not sure what distortion you're talking about, though?

First of all sorry for stealing pics of other members.

The first one I call distortion, the second one no distortion.

The last one is a pic of a gen 112, for my understanding is this slightly domed?

That's easy, different crystals and different angles.

Having owned several gen PAMs, I can promise you that the gen crystals have the same behavior that is captured in your first pic.

Here's a pic of my old gen PAM002D as an example:

Thats a clear example Hooligan, Thanks.

So if am looking for a pam with white dail, closet caseback, no date (or are there any that look good?) and not having the distortion (even when the gen have it as well) what choice do I have? I havent found any myself so far.

*NOT* having the distortion? None. It's a function of the shape/thickness of the crystal.

bud there are plenty of panerai threads around the forum, i think you should look around more. If you want a white dial pam with minimal distortion(totally no distortion is impossible as crystal is domed). Get a 113,or 114, and than get it ARed by takashi.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you please explain what the relation is between AR and distortion?

There is none. If the crystal is domed then it will be distorted from certain angles.

Another question on this topic I guess. I looked for PAM's without a (slightly) doomed crystal (so flat) but could not realy find them. Also on Panerai.com it is not stated in the specs. Anyone an idea with series doesnt have them?

Edwin, I think you should go look at the genuines' of these Panerai's at a local dealership. The distortion is part of the nostalgia of these watches.

If you cannot live with the distortion, Most Omega and Breitling's show no distortion at an angle and they are domed. :)
