Hi all, I'm looking at buying a pre owned cartier santos 100 xl, what are themain ways to differentiate reps versus gens aassuming that it isn't one of the super reps with genuine parts.

Good luck. This watch is rep'ed so well, sometimes I think it's one of those "back door " watches. I'd say to look closely at the strap. If they haven't gone through the trouble of sourcing a GEN one, that would be my first concern.
Thanks, what are the big tells on thestrap ? Do rep straps have cartier imprinted where thestrap meets the case side (you can only see when you take the strap off)
with the super rep, the X and the XI are really close, but no cigar the gen. There is a tiny, minute difference between the two still.
I'll make easy for you. Rep straps are made of cat skin and cardboard. At least, that's my theory. A GEN strap will look and smell like GEN strap.
generally the finish is much worse on a rep than a gen, you can tell by "feel", it's quite difficult to explain but I think it's easy to tell.
Take it to a AD and have it authenticated. That's a big ticket item. It wouldn't be out of the question to get it checked out before paying.
Id def have a Cartier tech look at it before paying. If it's a internet transaction, I wouldn't do it.
