Help! Need some PAM tute for a PAM noob!

I'm on the verge of making my virgin order for a PAM. Can someone educate me a little more before the go-ahead?

Where can I find the best PAM rep for value? Remember, I'm a PAM noob and I've never worn one before, hence the max I'd be willing to afford for a reb will be around $200.

Currently, I'm eyeing at Davidsen's new PAM000 and PAM005. I like particularly the logo, hence these two. Both are offered at around $300, which is to me a tad too expensive for a rep that is manual hand wind with no chrono. Which intricate parts are these costs going to?

Can someone tell me why Davidsen's rep are so expensive? How are these compared to those offered by other dealers?

David's reps generally have superlume on the dial and hands, no recessed pins, are hand inspected, and have clean movements. Being a handwind doesn't make it any less desireable than an asian automatic.

His watches are a very good deal if you don't mind the font flaws. I've owned six different pams (am down to one) but will add one of Davids in a heartbeat once he gets the dials down.

He fixes the recessed pin and lumes them up on some (things that are dead givaways, if you care about that sh*t). If you get a standard one from a dealer, they may or may not have these mods. If they don't you might find yourself wanting them. In that case you can always send it out to one of the mod guys here (i.e. Vaccum, etc.).

He tries to fix the major issues some people have with the watches. These may not be issues that will ever bother you. I love nice lume though :D

Errr... Recessed pin? You mean the CG? (... more pannie-noob questions)

I do agree on the superlume. Hate to kill the excitement of a pam on the wrist when I walk into the dark...

Anyway, here's another pannie-noob question. Is there a gen logo model with a clear back? I've read up the reference page in Paneristi that the only logo pams out there are PAM000 and PAM005. Is that true?

The recessed pin is referrering to the point where the large hands are attached. On 99% of the reps (excluding the 036), this is a problem. It should be flush with the hands, but is not. David fixes this.

The 000 and 005 are the only solid back base/Marina models. I prefer them because there isn't any issues with seeing incorrect movements. I could care less how a movement is decorated, as long as it's swiss and clean, not to say that asian movements are not clean.

:? Any picture or past posts to illustrate?

Anyway, what will be the biggest difference between a swiss and an asian 6497? Are asian movements going to run havoc on me?

I lost my panerai cherry to a silix prime 111h, the lume isn't great, theres no swan neck, it has a wafer thin crown and are other minor flaws but nothing that irritates me too much. Its was only $110 when i got it, am not sure what it will be today.

Don't worry about the chinese movements, mine runs absolutely fine no servicing and hand wind is much better than auto in my experience, but everyone has their own opinion on this.

whatever you get it won't be you last!

Hand wind is better than auto? In what sense? Aesthetically or practically? Is it more reliable? Pls educate me more...

both practically and aesthetically

when you put an automatic down for a couple of days unless you wind them then they stop and you've gotta set the time again, only takes a minute but its a pain in the ass. with both auto and manual you can always just pick them up and wind them however (correct me someone if i'm wrong) you never know if an auto is fully wound but you get to a point with a handwind when it won't let you wind anymore. this means that the watch is fully wound and it'll last a coupple of days. It also it nicer to wind a manual, less fiddly.

when i first got the watch i though winding would be irritating but its a joy, i wind mine regularly just because i like doing it and watching the gears spin.

reliabilty i have no idea, i dont check my watches to see if they are +- 10 seconds or whatever but i have never found them to be out over a long time but both my eta's are running fine as is my chinese hand wind...

Gotta add "Panerai Cherry" to my list.

I like d44hvj was also deflowered (ok not as funny as yours) on a 111H but mine was from River. It had a very nice price as well ($119 I think). If I had it to do all over again I would have gone with a 177H or save up and by one of many that I like from Davidsen.

just a note to add, if you only have one watch that you wear regularly then auto is gonna be easier.

Announcement Announcement...

After much reading up on reviews and other articles on pannies (not discounting the 'education' I'd just had from you guys here... haha), I have just broke the pannie virginity :p

... and my 'Cherry Pannie' is... *drum rolls*

Davidsen's PAM 005!!!

Just made the order a few minutes ago. Can't wait to see it! The experience was simply exhilarating. I was so nervous I even sent him $200 TOO MUCH by mistake!!! Silly me...

Wow! Thanks, vaccum! Very informational and truly educational! I learnt so much about watch parts and ATM today. I would like to know more. Would you kindly post a general topic under Replica Discussion or something on the tools to be used to open and work on the movement... with pics pls? You've gotten me so fired up to learn about maintaining my own watches...

Just curious, vaccum... would you happen to have tested on Davidsen's reps? Just curious how well waterproofed the PAM005 I just ordered will be... not a big deal even if it isn't as I don't dive. If I go swimming, I'd most likely wear my sub for the day.

(... and this time I'd keep it worn. Getting a gen Tag stolen while swimming is enough lesson learnt).

Thanks again, dude.

Thanks! Putting up a pictorial or tutorial is not a 123 deal, but I will be posting more pictorials/tutorials soon.
I am collecting pictures of the service and mod I am performing for the members here...stay tuned.
Now the waterproof test is a per watch situation. you need to test each watch to see the results.

Cheers, vaccum

I got this one for $128 from Andrew. It's a 21J auto movement. Mineral glass but it has killer AR coat on it. No canon pin problem.

I thought Panerai's were ugly watches when I first saw them. I bought this as a fun watch to see what the fuss is all about. After having the watch in my hands and around my wrist. I must say I like it a lot.

I changed the strap and sanded down the case for a brushed look.

If you want to go highend get one of Davidsen watches. That's for sure.
