Exploding Crystal Experience

Well it finally happened to me! After all the stories of exploding Fiddy Crystals several weeks ago, mine decided to go at a very inopportune time. Last Tuesday, I was flying from Salt Lake to Denver in the 1st class cabin and sitting at a right side window seat with my Fiddy on my left wrist. We had just reached flying altitude and the cabin was fairly quiet when all of a sudden there was a very loud POP ( About the level of one of those New Years pull-the -string poppers) and the lady next to me in the aisle seat was showered with particles of glass and she screamed very loudly. For some reason, I knew exactly what had happened and I looked down to see this jagged crater was all that was left of my watch crystal. The poor lady was kind of frozen in her seat doing this sort of Oh Oh Oh Oh moan and looking wide eyed for wounds on her person and I was frozen wide eyed staring at her and holding my left arm in the air. The Flight attendant rushed to ward us and the frightened lady, followed very quickly by a sky marshall ( This flight was continuing on to Boston). The lady was taken to the front of the cabin and I was isolated with the sky marshall who told me to put both hands behind my neck. I was quickly repeating that my watch crystal popped and broke and that was what had happened. When he let me show him the damaged watch he soon believed that it was a weird accident. He made me surrender the watch and picked up some the shards of glass on the floor and seat, and actually found an 1 inch diameter piece from the center of the crystal. Thank God that the watch was still working, which seemed to prove that the watch was not some sort of explosive devise. After a discussion with the Captain, They checked out the watch very carefully, and an inspection of the lady, the flight attendant brought the watch back to me and helped to calm me down as well. I apologized to the shaken lady who was then very gracious and realized my complete embarressment. I was totally mortified, 1st of all by what had just happened, but also because it had happened with a REP and not the real thing, somehow this made it even more embarressing (Even though no one else knew that or even considered it). Then the guy across the aisle from the lady asks me to see the watch and I hand it to him. After a minute of inspecting the damage, He says "I really know how you must feel" and shows me his 1950 Flyback Chrono on his right wrist and tells me this is the 1st time he has ever seen anybody else wearing a Panerai and this should not have happened to one with a Sapphire Crystal and I was one unlucky SOB. He told me that my Fiddy was still beautiful and Officine Panerai would definately make it right. (3 days before I had put a new OEM Golden Calf Fiddy strap with Oem buckle on the rep and it looked stunning). The lady and I changed seats and I continued to talk Panerai with my new buddy. Thank God for all the time and reads that I have experienced on this forum, because I not only could talk Panerai but I actually knew more about the subject than he did. We kept inspecting each others watch and he kept commenting on how beatiful the case and dial was and especially the exposition caseback and movement (While I kept looking to see if his was a fake) LOL.
What an experience and I am happy to say that I am getting a replacement watch from the dealer and he was most gracious and generous to the highest order. ( Offered to pay a replacment fee plus shipping, But he refused to take it. I was blown away). I really felt naked without a watch for the next 4 days (I usually travel with at least 2, but the Fiddy is so special to me that it was the only one I wanted to wear). What a weird series of events!!

Wow, Roger. That's horribly unfortunate. I'm glad to hear that your dealer is making it right for you. You *may* want to upgrade with one of Davidsens AR coated sapphire Fiddy crystals?

It would have even been more unfortunate if that lady next to you would have lost an eye or have been injured......headline in the Enquirer...."Woman blinded by fake watch crystal explosion gets replacement fake eye"......Believe it or not? :)

Thanks, your comment has made me decide to order a spare crystal from Davidsen, if in case the inevitable happens again. With the new resourses of Vacuum, I could have it done. I really love the Fiddy.

This is a wild story man.

Roger: you poor bugger! Not only the blasted crystal exploding but then taken for a potential terrorist (initially).

Glad you're OK mate - makes me think twice, now, about wearing the Fiddy while flying ... though did replace mine w/ a DSN AR ... hopefully more robust!

Take care and best of luck, mate!

It's odd, but the center of my Fiddy's crystal just popped out this week. It was almost a perfect circle. What's causing this on the watches?

Yup, seems to be the common occurence...mine popped two weeks ago, while writing a memo on a PC...glass was everywhere, keyboard, desk, floor...ugly experience..and sad at the same time :-(

cheers,

Wow, Roger. What a story. I never heard of this happening. What an odd situation. Especially with the times we live in.

It reminds me of a story where Roger Daltry (of the Who) was in an airport, and a fan asked him how the new Who album was doing. Being British, his answer was, "Great, it's gone a bomb!", meaning that it was doing real well. Next thing he knew, he was being taken into custody and questioned about the bomb! And that was about 15 years ago.

Whats going on with these so called Sapphire cystals?

Now the big Pregnent question for the dealers is - JUST WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THESE SO-CALLED SAPPHIRE CRYSTALS. There have been at least 12 of these same situations with the same watch. Does this forum ever connect the dots? There is another thread that may have been abandoned by now called "Dealer Misrepresentation" and I am over here talking about a subject that was brought up around the 1st of September and all have spoken to the same issue of Mineral glass vs Sapphire glass. I am getting a replacement watch, but is the same goddamn thing going to happen again? Again and again and again the quality control issue comes up all the time and the same old excuses are trotted out. I swear the cheap old reps I bought years ago, the dam things still work and these were $20 to $40 dollar watches. If I pay $300.00 for a watch I expect it to work and not just for days or weeks. Who the hell ever heard of exploding crystals. What abunch of SHIT!!!

To all US Airmarshals Patroling Domestic Flights in US Airspace, A new Device for Covert Terrorist Attacks has been Signaled. The Device Wich Replicates A Oversized Watch (47mm) Holding A Un-Identified Syntatic Explosive (USE) Wich The Assailant wears around the left or right wrist (Both methods have been observed) While seated next to his victim The Assailant will Fake to re-set The Time of his "Explosive Watch" But infact He triggers The USE Explosive-Charge by pulling on A hidden Lever (Simular to A US M-18 Hand Grenade) The Assailant will point The Device (With A "Crystal" That looks like A Washing-machine Door) In The Direction of his Target, The Charge Will make A "Poping" Sound (Simmular to A Silenced 9mm HK MP-5) And Spray the Victim with It's Syntatic Crystals Shrapnel. So in effect This device Is A "Wrist held Claymore mine"
One Of The Victims to this new Device Came off with A shock, The Explosive Set Off by The Terrorist Did Explode But It seems The Killing Zone is relative small, Or The Shrapnel Patern is too Wide She Was not Injured while the Shrapnel was all over her. (Read Uneffective If The distance to the Target is more then A Yard)
Signal.
Look For Caucasian Males 30-40 Years, Casual Dress, Sometimes Hidding the Device under A shirt Sleeve (Look for Big Bubble) But in most Cases The Assailant is Confident in The Replicated Watch Shape, And seems to Show Off his Device to the public around him!
The Device Is Easy to recognise beacuse of its Size, and Off-model Lever Device
Counter-Method;
1/ At All times Hold-Off the Wearer At least One Yard. Don't Use Close Combat Weapons!
2/ Use ATF Splinter Goggles, Or Sunglasses and FLack Jacket.
3/ Hold The Terrorist At Gun Point
4/ Force The Terrorist to Put Both Hands, Arms stretched On the Head-rest in front of him. If He Does not Obey Don't hessitate to shoot!
5/ Let One of the Aircrew With ATF Goggles And Flak Jacket Remove The Device. Because This is Heavely Strapped To the Terrorist Wrist It is adviced to Use A Sharp edged Knive, To Cut This 26x26x5mm Strap. The Heavy Buckle Is not easy To open And Can be used As A wapeon!

There have been no Claims, For The Frequent Attacks.

That's all we need....another security check at the Airport....getting scanned for possibly exploding watches...maybe the security personnel at the gate will have a way to check if the crystal is genuine sapphire....I might fly more if I can all my watches checked

Just for information if the dealer listing describes the watch as having "Synthetic Sapphire" that means it's Mineral glass. If it's described as just "Sapphire" then it's Sapphire. I have seen a number of fiddy's where the crystal is not seated square in the bezel and this obviously creates tension in the glass that changes in atmostpheric pressure can cause that stress to relieve itself! My suspicion is that the crystal in this case was more likely to have be mineral but I could be wrong.

On several Rep Sites You will find posts on Exploding Crystals.
It is quite Technical, Mineral Glass Will Chip or Crack. Saphire (Also Syntatic Because It is Man made) comes in two Variations Of wich one Is A saphire layer on top of mineral Crystal. This two materials have diffrent Carasterics And The tension in the Dome Shape might cause these to Burst into Fragments.

Plastic Plexi or Perspex Domes Wont Burst or Pop out.
This is the reason why these are the best materials for Pilots Watches. The Author Of this post Learned this the Hard way.
Scrathces You Say?... Indeed But Scratches on the Dome Shaped Canopy Of A Fighter Aircraft Are Far more Dangerous To the Pilots Survival in A dogfight, Then Scratches that Give His Watch A Vintage Look.

BTW
Now Your know Why Some Fighter Pilots Sport Goggles In their Closed Canopy....To protect Their Eyes against Bursting Rep Crystals 8)
