Apparently Arsenal have agreed a fee of 17 million Euro's for Sahin at the end of his loan deal. Arsenal obviously don't need to buy him if they don't want him but it's still a fairly good deal I suppose. We just need a good left back now, though realistically there's not many good ones out there that we can sign right now.

The latest transfer sagas are making me cross-eyed, this Sahin ordeal is a nightmare. We secured him, then he'd going to Liverpool, then we hijacked the deal, then he's on his way, Liverpool hijack the deal. Now he's back on his way.

AW has been scouting this guy for years now and its well known he is a big fan. I suppose the only way AW would agree to a loan was if there was a buyout clause at the end, just in case he turned out to be unf*ckingbelievably good.

Sources claim apparently the initial deal which was agreed on both sides was a loan deal for 2m and a buyout clause of 8m at the end, with AFC having first right of refusal if RM decided to sell him. Somewhere close to finalising that, Mourinho decided to live up to his 'Special one' tab and upped the buyout to 14m or higher.

Alonso supposedly tried to talk him into joining 'pool, speaking of which I hear their playing styles are very alike. Coming from RM (and probably having a point or two to prove to a manager who played him as a defender in preseason), I think he would prefer to play CL footy, so I wonder about all this 'pool hijacking our bid stuff. Of course, if the deal does not include a buy clause, I don't see Wenger agreeing to take ANY player on loan for a year, pay his not-so-meagre salary, give him game time, develop him, and then giftwrap him and give him back to RM as an improved product.

So per the Spanish press it now looks like this is finally done, with Sahin probably set to play against Stoke. Let's see.

Hey Murk, this wouldn't be a normal AFC summer without a transfer deal that went on and on would it :)

I remember last summer's deadline day - thinking 'Well f*ck it then, we haven't bought anyone worthwhile, this is the year Spurs finish above us for sure, there goes the neighborhood, etc etc' and when I woke up next morn we had signed Mert, Santos, Benayoun AND the man with the most unflappable hairdo in football.

Leighton Baines.

But I think Gibbs and Santos should be able to manage good enough. Santos needs to work on his defence a little more though (and his driving )

Or maybe not. :picard:
He's joined Liverpool. Baines would be a good lb for us, but you have to question whether or not the club could afford him. Everton wanted £15m for Rodwell, no doubt Baines would be Arsenal's priciest signing ever should he join.

Apparently he will. Although we may get better details later, various sources report Liverpool agreed to pay 70% of his wage. Spanish press says he is on 100,000 a week, that's 70,000 a week for a player who didnt play much last year (also yet untested in the EPL), and then give him back to RM. That's a lot of money, considering Song was on 55000 a week. Might have been a great signing and will probably be so for 'pool, but there's no way AW would spend that kind of money on a loan signing. Permanent yes, loan - impossible.

And if he's good enough to spark a bid war at the end of the year, you bet we won't be able to match City's/PSG's/Any other big spender's muscle if they come in for him. We all know AW bargains on transfers like he spending his own money, not the club's. I may not agree with the spendthrift attitude sometimes, but at least you dont feel robbed because he spent crazy money on guys like Carroll

Very informative posts Thorne, ive read that Liverpool are paying his wage plus £4mil to loan him for the season, that's alot of money to help develop RM's player.

In Arsene we trust, rumours of Jesus Navas, M'vila and Bigilia are still rife.

Some extremely interesting reading here, just another reason why although Wenger's thrift model may not ensure immediate success, it ensures AFC's best interests in the long term.

You can read it at http://www.fm-base.co.uk/forum/rest/104497-michu-move-signals-spains-severe-sickness.html

Michu Move Signals Spain's Severe Sickness
Two-and-a-half million euros. Two and a half million blinking euros. That's all it would have taken for any one of the 19 clubs in this year's Primera division to take Michu off Rayo Vallecano's indebted hands and land themselves a passionately committed footballer who is a near guarantee for at least ten goals a season along with buckets of sweat in every single game he plays in.

The midfielder's two goal debut for Swansea at the weekend may have been a surprise for Premier League pundits, but it was no great shock for lovers of la Liga. The Oviedo-born player knocked in 15 for the relegation-threatened Rayo last season, so it was obvious that the physical and feisty Michu would thrive with greater quality surrounding him.

But two-and-a-half million euros was the fee that no-one in Spain was willing to pay. Or perhaps able to pay is the correct description. Whilst the barn-storming Asturian may not have the quality desired by Real Madrid and Barcelona, Michu could have done a job for plenty of other clubs, if they could have afforded him, that is. This is where the big problem lies. Valencia would have had the funds due to the sale of Jordi Alba to Barcelona, but opted for the free transfer of Nelson Váldez to boost their forward line.

Málaga are apparently so penniless now that the club is reliant on a 16-year-old academy player for goals, as was the case with Fabrice Olinga in Saturday's win over Celta Vigo. The club is now scrabbling around to find the funds to bring in the been-around-the-block Javier Saviola. 12 months ago, the club spent €65 million in the transfer market. This summer, nearly €30m of talent has been sold, instead.

Atlético Madrid's €210m or so debt with the taxman sees the Rojiblancos spending just €1m on a single player this summer. And this is a club desperately in need of support for Falcao, with Adrián managing just seven in la Liga last season. Sevilla have been without Champions League cash for two campaigns. That's pretty much the end of list of the clubs that could even have considered bringing in the Swansea player and that would have been considered a step-up for the midfielder. "The economic situation in Spanish football is really bad. It's a difficult moment for them," noted Michael Laudrup, who was understandably delighted at his acquisition.

But maybe this is all a little presumptuous.

Perhaps Michu would have told another Spanish club to spin on it had an offer been made. After all, having spent a year at a club in administration chasing his wages - which would have been relatively paltry in the first place - perhaps Michu was looking forward to the experience of being paid on time and in full.

Perhaps Michu was looking forward to playing on a Saturday afternoon and not at nearly one in the morning as the footballers for Mallorca, Espanyol, Levante, Atlético Madrid, Zaragoza and Valladolid had to do this weekend.

Perhaps Michu was looking forward to a simple, uncomplicated life in a league that is not as idiotically and illogically organised at that in Spain.

The transfer of Michu to Swansea and not, for example, Sevilla is an indication of the desperate trouble la Liga is in these days. Whilst Real Madrid and Barcelona may be able to sign squad-filling bench warmers such as (potentially) Luka Modric and Alex Song, the economic situation elsewhere is more desperate than ever.

According to transfermarkt.co.uk la Primera's clubs have spent €74m on players to date - Barça are responsible for around half of that - with €102m in sales. That puts la Liga behind the Turkish league and the Championship in terms of net spend. Whilst a large chunk of the blame for this can be put on Spain's dire economic situation affecting marketing and sponsorship funds as well as income from supporters, the game in Spain has also suffered appalling internal mismanagement as well as the familiar issue of the TV income distribution which saw Real Madrid receiving €150m last season and the relegated Racing getting €15m.

However, despite protests from clubs, this carve-up will remain in place and everyone else will continue to struggle and slip even further behind the top two. Supporters will stay away from the grounds, especially when matches are scheduled in the middle of the holiday season in mid-thirties temperatures or at 11 o'clock at night on a Monday.

The stars of Spain - the current World and European Champions, let's not forget - will continue to be piled up in the Real Madrid or Barcelona squads, which only have so much space, or leave for England. Just five of Spain's 2012 squad currently play for clubs outside of the Premier League or Madrid and Barça, two of these - Javi Martínez and Fernando Llorente - could be leaving la Liga before the end of the transfer window. Santi Cazorla was the latest to depart, a truly dreadful loss of talent for la Liga for what was a knock-down price.

Michu's move to the Premier League may have been a mere footnote in the papers in Spain, but the transfer to Swansea signals a serious sickness being suffered by la Liga. Unfortunately, it's a sickness that is so complex, deep set in the DNA and has gone on untreated for so long that it's difficult to know where to find the cure.

Read a great story that we are going to make a last min bid for Sahin, I'd love it, but doubt it

Well what do you have to say about yesterday's game?

I must say I was very impressed with the defence, rock solid and didn't look in danger of being breached throughout.

Arteta is doing a great job shielding the back four, although I imagine he would be better off linking up with Cazorla higher up the pitch, if we can get a focused DM this week.

Gerv/Theo had an off day. The Ox looked lively as usual. For all the snide remarks all over the media about Giroud, he gave 100% throughout and gave Stoke's CBs a hard time, and is not easily pushed off the ball. There's some criticism at his audacious volley but he wasn't far off, maybe didn't see Ramsey either.

For the first time in years, Arsenal went to Stoke and matched them shoulder to shoulder, and didn't get bullied off the ball. Cazorla looked like he's been in the EPL for years. Podolski's direct runs at the CBs were fun to watch.

Great to see the defence improved greatly under Bould. Sagna and Kos yet to come in.

Bendtner,Park,Arshavin could be out this week. I think Chamakh should be kept as backup, for all his loss of form in front of goal, he's another player who puts in hard work whenever he is played.

We need one DM. Capoue would be a great option, but Mail links us with Cabaye. I think Capoue would be more of a destroyer, anyway.

Soooooooooo...

What do you Gunners fans think for the game against Liverpool?

Sahin to play?

Thoughts on how the midfields compare?

I'm excited after seeing how we played against City. How we play against you lot will show whether we sink or swim with our new set-up. Bring it on! :)

Your midfield will depend on how the players gel. Gerrard up front for sure. Then who plays back, Allen/Sahin/Lucas? Suarez in form, though.

Should be a good game, always is, remember the 4-4? :)

Both teams usually set up to go out and win it. The difference might be down to new ins and outs during this week....

Ha - was thinking the same. The teams I expect to play could have completely changed by Friday...

I'd actually like to see Gerrard as one of our front three (unless we buy a real finisher/poacher) until/if Borini becomes it for us. He's still better at sticking them in than anyone we've got bar maybe an on-form Suarez.

Then I'd see Lucas (pending fitness/Shelvey), Allen and Sahin as the mid three.

I was at the 4-4, feels like forever ago now.

If we go with Sterling again (he's 17, presume can play twice a day!), is he a worry? Am always intrigued to know what the non-Reds think of our supposed 'threats'.

Against Stoke 0-0 told us that the defence is solid, midfield is integrated and the attack is still trying to gel, the game stats further back this up

Possession: 67% Arsenal
Corners: Arsenal 11 Stoke 0
Goal attempts Arsenal 17 Stoke 6

We are looking for another defender, a DM and maybe a nippy little striker who can play off the big Giroud. We need to sort Walcotts contract and a couple of games to gel and solidify, not quite title challengers yet but still solid results considering.

With the greatest of respect to Stoke; are they really a true test of a top team's defence? Whilst you can of course only play what's in front of you, I wouldn't be jumping to 'defence sorted' just because you kept Stoke at bay...

That said; from what I've seen on MOTD, your team did look quite settled and wasn't missing RVP quite as much as I expected. I honestly expected you to crumble. Suppose the true test will come, like the defence, against the teams in your peer group (the top 4/5/6).

Any team playing stoke away will find it hard. The fans are intimidating, they park the bus and playing a very physical / long ball game. They've always been a test for Arsenal as we usually can't match their strength and our team gets knocked about and concede a goal. So in terms of dealing with that side of game while still keeping crouch out of the air I think we did well. Of course tougher tests are on the horizon.

Besides Stoke have a personal vendetta against Arsenal after Shawcross sliced Ramsey's leg in two. Didn't you hear the boos when Ramsey came on? Although they are known to play a very physical game its always a little more when it's Arsenal.

Considering the way they used to boot us off the ball in earlier matches, this time was a giant leap forward for the Gunners. Looks like the guys are throwing themselves into the tackle now. Influence of Bould I wonder?

Theo's benching may be an indication of contract talks not progressing as well as hoped

Sterling is fast and tricky, will be great to see the battle between him and Jenks

Fair point, they are certainly a rough bunch... If aiming for Barca-esque possession throttling though (as we now appear to be - admittedly some way off!), you've gotta just be that bit faster and they can't get near no matter how big!

Saw the Afellay news, can't say I know much of him. Saw him play once for PSV I think but nothing since. Guess he's finally decided he doesn't like being in the reserves!

Sly Sports reporting interest from you, us and Spurs... Hmmmmm

Ya. Awful of their fans booing him like that - how dare he break his leg at their ground! Muppets.

Ha, can't imagine Wenger approving too much physicality in your games. He likes players that can dance, not fighters!

For a while, I thought Walcott would come to us this summer. Didn't know what to make of it tbh, like him when on form but seems to blow cold too often for my liking. Have seen him in simply disappear in games, much like Babel did for us. At the final whistle you see him walking off and think '**** me, where've you been?!'.

Bit early to say, but am certainly excited by Sterling's potential. The more we can see him tested, the better. So yep, be good to see if he plays.

Well, well. Things learnt from that game:

Diaby when fit can be a monster in midfield. 3 games + training sessions + preseason and not a hint of injury yet. Called up to French squad too. The run halfway through the pitch to set up Giroud was great, as was his ability to get out of tight situations in midfield specially in the first half.

Arteta seems to be enjoying his DM stint. The slide tackle on Suarez was point perfect. Also capable of spraying cross field passes from deeper lying positions which suits this new role. Always there when the CBs are looking to pass.

Cazorla... You know, finally, we've replaced Cesc. If this is what he does 3 games into the season you wonder what'll happen in 3 months.

670324A7-4D6A-4DDE-BE3A-4D4CCD5472BC-4875-000003FB7C1655E8.jpg

Podolski can and will score given half a chance.

Giroud still needs a goal, but he's getting there. Too much pressure on himself, maybe? Biggest plus - can knock down hoofed balls to Poldi/Caz.

Jenks still needs work but pretty much managed to contain Sterling for much of the game.

Suarez is a c*nt. There's no hiding from that. Would be a much better player if he didn't keep looking like he got fragged every 2 minutes.

3 games, 3 clean sheets. I don't know what Bould is doing, but it's working. Szcz back in squad after the international break.

Andre Santos - he drives how he wants, he drives how he wants :)
