Hi guys,

I’ve been much more active on the AP subforum, so hello to you all from me.

Wanted to ask a question: has anyone here ever frankened a Nautilus? I am looking to build a 3700/5711 hybrid: I like the look of the old dial and the simplicity and beauty of the movement (no seconds hand). I just managed to get a nicely aged 3700 dial to go with an AP 2121 cal (same as the PP 28-255). I intend to use a 5711 case (the recently launched PF one) for the build.

Well, I hope it all turns out well. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know, many thanks in advance.

Here’s how my set looks for the moment:

Wow. Speechless! I've see it done in the watchout section on TRF, a gen movement in a 5711 case with a rep dial. Wasn't a great effort. I'll try and dig some pics out. I know somebody who has a closed Caseback 3700 that they may sell. PM me if you would like their forum details. (This isn't a backdoor sale. The watch isn't even mine)

i just ordered the PF nautilus but would love a closed caseback, is it possible to "pop" the glass and fit a metalplate there or is there someone selling replica casebacks without glass?

Very excited to see how this turns out, considered getting a gen dial for a Nautilus build but damn those prices are high.

However, wasn't the 3700 a smaller watch? Will the dial fit in a new, larger, 5711 rep case?

3700 is 42mm, the 3800 was smaller at 37mm

Possible yes, worthwhile probably not.

This would be the mother of all epic builds! I really hope this can be done and you find the right case for it - I can't wait to see pictures.
From all I've read, it could be tricky to get the dial to fit one of the rep cases without pretty significant modification. Swapping dials between different rep versions has proven quite tricky and usually needs modding of the dial. But then the PF is brand new so who knows...This is true pioneering, good luck!

The case of the 3700/1A Nautilus measures 42mm in diameter, for 1976 a considerably large case. It was soon nick named Nautilus Jumbo. The ref.3700/1A model consists of two parts basically, the case and the bezel. The bezel and case are screwed to eachother

In the Nautilus 5711/1A the case had become a bit bigger. The new – or current – case measures 43mm and is a little bit thicker. The ref. 5711/1A also has a three-part constructed case. Besides the bezel and case construction, the case back is now a separate part.

Caseback is closed on the 3700 vs open on the 5711, and the braclet have different openining and logo. Raised patek logo for the 3700 vs engraved to the 5711.

About the franken question. Yes there was a franken 3700 with gen dial sold time ago on repgeek for about 800usd.

Probably you can source an old 3700 wich will have the wrong dw position but i remember measuring the case and was 42 and two part screw together case.

I had bought that Gen Dial and the parts only since I already had the MBW case.

I put off the project for a while because I couldn’t get the dial refinished or source the markers. T’s post on the AP Franken thread and talking to him via PM has inspired me to take jump start the project back up again.

Here is the current state of my build.

Hands have been cleaned off already. They were in storage for too long.

I have a gen font (not gen pp) date wheel that need to be used as an over lay on ETA disk. Because I am not using a AP Cal 2121 or JLC Cal 920.
Deciding on the markers if I should use rep ones or try to source gen.

The DW I’ll use on the left and Gen 3800 DW on the right for font comparison. Wish I could find same font and size ETA date wheel. Would have made life a lot easier.

I have this ETA DW on the way also. seems to the right size but the fonts are a bit off from Gen.

Sorry T. Hope you don’t mind me hijacking your thread. Really excited for the build. And also can’t wait to see yours finished.

Was wondering whrere this went to! Great. Now personally i would not spend time sourcing a AP Cal 2121 or JLC Cal 920 because that would have no value. what i think is the hardest thing to find is the deployan for the 3700. if i remember correct you had an old 21J brown dial patek that should have the correct raised logo wich you can use. now about the date wheel im not sure the 3700 and 3800 share the same one because the movement on this two is different. Patek Philippe 28-255 C For the 3700 and Cal. 335 SC, for the 3800. About the markers i though you had them from the old dial cant they feet? you want to do this on your own or have a modder working on it?

I actually didn’t have the Raised deployment clasp. But bought another one with a 21j movement which had the raised logo. So I am using the clasp from that watch in this build.
Yes you are correct 3800 and 3700 use different movements and their DW position is also different. 3800’s date wheel is the size of regular ETA wheel. But the 3700 has a larger sized wheel like the white one I posted. But the Font on the most 3800s and 3700 are the same.

I do have the rep dial markers which I have reshaped to look more to the gen (rounded edges) still needs to be rodium plated. but I am not very satisfied with them. So not really sure If i want to use them or not.

Gen dial’s pinion hole had to be widened to accommodate the ETA (If i hadn’t done that already I would have tried to source a Cal 2121 or JLC 920. And gen hands (still looking for Gen hands).

I did the mods (which is basically ruin the gen dial further [emoji39]) so far. But will be sending it to a professional for the final assembly.

But I have seemed to have lost the lug pins that hold the Braclet and the dial. Will figure that out once I have the head completed.

I try it...but I decide to sell the parts...now I’m do a 3800 fg....for the 3700 you have to use the correct case a old 5711 bp dial (and change the markers )and Ap hand...

Nice mate...why you don’t try to print dw for the 3800 and the other nautilus if you have a gen dw....

I am doing a similar build but with a sw200 dial, even if I am searching for a bp v1 dial (if somebody have one let me know).
I am searching for a datewheel line the white one posted, can somebody help me finding one? I don’t know the right diameter.
Thanks guys
