Hey guys,

been reading of some PAM reps going for over a grand a couple of times now but couldn't find any pics or similar.

Would thos of you who own or have owned such pieces please explain a little as to why they're that expensive, what makes them so special and if possible, post some pics?

Thanks,

Marc

Personally I think the name of this thread should be $1000 Reps - Why.

Thanks!

I fully understand "why". I wanted to know "where" to start.

Start by giving yourself brain damage, then you'll find a way to spend $1K + on a rep ;)

I've spent way more money on way more stupid things than a watch, so if you wanna put it that way...

Start by giving yourself brain damage

...been there, done that.

Any digital watch for approx. 100$ (if that "much") will tell me exactly what time it is, what date and most probably it comes with an alarm and water resistance to. So I guess from that point of view, even a cheapo 128$ rep is silly. But I didn't come here to discuss what I need - I came here to discuss what I like :proud:

Regards,

Marc

But when looked at 1k for a replica that's been built of a 50k to even a watch worth 100k + isn't that much.

Any nice vintage build or a nice pre-v build could easily cost 1k without any gen parts...

Yup... Any "proper" PreV build will easily set you over $1K without gen parts, especially those with DLC/PVD coatings like a 202a.

Even those so-called frankens are sold with heavy discount when they're close to the $1K range since the gen part begins at around $250 for the cheapest one (i.e. crown).

ummm gen Ti crowns I have seen go for 80...no reason for 250 JEEZE lol

ya a nice 201a will cost around 1k too once you do the fgd dial, lume, pre-v drilled lugs, LH cg, t48, servicing, DSN hands, swiss engine, jakob caseback, plates for the movement...lol and LOTS of waiting

Yeah once you start modding a watch the cost can skyrocket. It is something you do for personal satisfaction not financial sense.

I agree with you 100% Fakey but it doesn't stop guys listing the mods in the sales thread and then wanting extra for them.

If you can get a reliable movement I think $1000 is a small price to pay in a rep to a 5k plus watch. Heck a collegue of my paid 16k for a Pam 332 (regatta retropante 1950) and he's sent it back to Panerai twice for movement issues. It has one of Panerai's inhouse calibre's hehehe. He can't tell my Pam is a rep btw. Of course, to much money, to little brains!

I have more than $1800 on my 111 franken with OEM movement. It's unlikely I will ever sell it though.

The cost is mostly due to parts (mix of gen and high end rep ones).

Parts on the 111:

- OEM movement, crown and stem
- LH dial, hands and CG
- Jackson case and crystal
- Standard rep H series caseback
- Chieftang AR on the crystal
- OEM deployant rubber

Gen parts for sure. Hell you can buy a BK WM9 watch and add the gen crystal, gen crown, and in some cases a gen insert and you'll be right at your $1k mark. Buy an Breitling SA and get a gen dial and strap will put you at that range as well. Pams to me will get there so much quicker though.
