Try to make a 1675 cartel case a bit better...

While looking for a „better“ case for an 1675 build that i have in mind,
i started a case comparison between what kind of aftermarket cases are available
(on pictures only, as I’m a poor boy)

Then I come to the conclusion to try to make one by my own with a BP/Cartel case, just to give it a try.

Should mention that i have a lathe, drill press, grinder, polishing machine & so on in my workshop.

While starting with the cartel case & compare it with a gen 16710 that i have,
I discovered very soon that case thickness is an issue (besides lug holes and shape) with the cartel.

Cartel has 5,26mm where the 16710 has 4,6mm in thickness.

Cartel oob:

So i milled down the cartel case on my lathe to get it to 4,6mm

As i worked on the lathe, i milled down the bezel slightly:

The „sad“ part on a cartel case is that there is not enough material at the top side of the crown guards to make it close to 1675 gen.
But it’s close enough for a 16710 or (in my case) to a 1675 with PCG (pointed crown guards)

To give you a idea about the differences here are some picture comparisons between:

Default cartel case & my processed case (let’s call it HG case):

As the rep Plexi is a bit to high from my experience,
i try to lower it a bit...

(left my version - right default cartel crystal)

Awesome stuff HG - really interesting read and excellent work!

Could I ask for a little more detail on how/where you milled away the material from the cartel case? Was it from top and bottom? It looks like both, but it's not 100% clear from the photos.

Correct, I milled it from both sides.
0.5 from the top & 0.15 from bottom - to be precise.

The bottom side was done to get the caseback „closer“ to the case, while i make use of a flattened caseback (instead of the bubbly 5513 one, that comes with the cartel case)

Nice job on the case height. Lug holes look a tick too large. What size did you drill them out to?

Wow, that looks great. What side of the bezel did you shave? I was thinking of doing the same but looking at it for a while I couldn't say for sure where or how much material to remove. I'm guessing the top since the edge of the bezel sits slightly proud if the insert. Sound about right?

Milled the bottom down slightly about 0.1mm,
in a way that is „even“ with the retaining ring.
More wasn’t possible by the design of the bezel/retaining ring.

(Didn’t pushed the insert in correctly when taking the pics, to be honest)

Sorry mate, I should have been more specific. I wasn't critiquing yours (looks brilliant!) but rather stating that my bezel sits proud of my insert. If I wanted my insert flush with the bezel I could shave a few 10ths of a mm I suspect.
But now that I know that I can shave the bottom a bit, that's the path I shall take. Thanks!

No worries...
As I’m just a hobbyist, i know that I’m far from being a professional sometimes.

If i understand you correctly, your insert sits to high in the bezel (right?)
In that case, i would suggest to sand down the insert a bit, instead of milling the bezel.
Much easier...
