So damn near everyone here knows I’ve been wanting the best 16800 build. This was my grail watch. The watch that started my interest in watches.

First build was a JF 16610 base with a Richview dial. Rich’s dials were not bad but the JF case was not gen spec so it was a pain to get it aligned with the date wheel.

Then I had the opportunity to get a ST3135 case from a member here. I ordered everything except the bezel. Not sure what I was thinking but I thought WSO’s were gen spec. NOPE.

Another member offered to help me get a ST bezel ring. While that was on order, I bought a ST case set from another member. Lol (this hobby is gonna get me divorced).

Heard about the Dung_chrono guy on eBay to get a dial from. His dials are not bad but while I was looking around on eBay on Labor Day weekend, I came across a nicely patina’d, gen dial and won the auction. It was one of those “damn. I’m kinda hoping I don’t win this” ideas at the end but oh well.

One of my old watch repair guys I know emails me and tells me he has what I’ve been bugging him about for a while (gen 3135 date disc with open 6 & 9s’). I said I would take all of them (always nice to have back ups). Was hoping for a good deal but I got the usual price but hey, it is what it is. Those things are about as easy to find as a unicorn these days.

So here we go!

Build number 1.

ST Case.
ST Bezel set.
Clarks crystal with AR
Clarks gasket.
STs casket set.
Gen 16800 tritium dial.
VR3135
ST hands.
Lumed by me
Case reshaped by me.
Gen tube
Gen 16800 crown (wide coronet)
ST insert
Gen date wheel
Tymia weathering kit

Case reshaping is a bit of a pain on the stubby crown guards but the crown guards on gen 16800s are not the tallest either so I just shaped them as best as I could. Beveling the lugs and polishing (there is no way a dial that looks like this with a case that looks brand new).

Recessed the case tube and shaved the crown guard space.

And apparently Tapatalk will not let me upload anything pics for the month so I’ll add more tomorrow.

I’ll be following this one too... I’m both impressed and a little aghast to see a gen dial given a Tamiya weathering kit makeover, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it works out in the end product.

And now...... Here is my pumpkin spice sub!

That weathering kit works great on inserts too (once you sand them a little).
Now, to work on the other dial build.

Weathering kit is pretty damn cool but you have to be pretty careful with it. I went a little overboard the first time and ended up haing to clean a lot of it off. It makes the dial look completely different imo.

I just need my other crystal and my other VR3135 movement to show up and I am DONE! One of my 3 will most likely go on sale eventually. I definitely dont need 3 16800s. Most likely the richview dial one.

I was never a fan of the "beat up" look on a sub but now that Im seeing it daily, Im loving it.

You have to be REALLY gentle with the weathering. I used a much thinner brush and basically just dry brushed it so that it only stuck in the scratches and dimples and such. The dial was already pretty beat up when I got it. Hell, the tritium was almost gone on the 2 marker. Had to re-lume it with white powder and what was left of the tritium.

Of course I completely forgot I was working on a tritium dial with powdery lume with my nose pretty much next to it. Oh well. It wouldn’t be the first time I accidentally inhaled tritium. Not much I can do about it now.

I may have an addiction problem. Hehe.

Actually started our liking the matte dial more but the gen dial with the applied markers have really grown on me. It’s easily turning in to my daily.

Specs on build #1
ST case set
ST bezel set
ST springbars.
ST Swiss quality bezel
WM9 Pearl
ST hands (I have a few new sets on the way to replace these)
Clarks crystal and gasket with AR
Gen tube
Gen crown for 16800 with wide coronet
Gen case screws for movement.
Gen 16800 dial with applied markers.
VR3135 movement serviced by Cosmograph4Ever

Specs ok build #2
ST case set
ST bezel set
ST Swiss quality bezel
ST hands
ST tube
ST Springbars
Clarks crystal and gasket with AR
Vietnam crown (shaved slightly)
Dung_choro dial
VR3135 movement (stock)

Both ST cases reshaped and refinished by me.
Rehaut shaved to be shallower
Lugs thinned and beveled and then polished so it doesn’t look brand new.
Crown guards reshaped and recessed so they’re flush.

I’m having a hard time trying to decide which one to keep because at least 1 has to go. LOL.

Gorgeous!

What is "ST" ?

It’s a watch part selling company. They don’t sell to the public so they are hard to find sometimes.

Looking good man. 16800 builds are the never ending journey!

I know it!
Every time I complete a build, i find something I like (a dial, insert, case..etc) and have to start over.
