The explorer owes its existence to Rolex’s efforts to improve their waterproof cases (Rolex was the first brand to make their watches water proof-thus the Oyster designation) and improve the robustness of the case.

The origins of the Explorer stems from the ‘Bubbleback’ watches, as the ‘Bubbleback’ Rolex was extremely tough and solid. After several early explorer models like the 6150 and 6098, Rolex officially carried the ‘Explorer’ designation on the dial with the 6350 model in 1953.

One of the first things you notice about the 6350 Explorer – honeycomb is the marvellous dial (see picture below). It is what collectors often refer to as ‘honeycomb’ .

The 6350 is the first Explorer to have the name ‘Explorer’ written on the dial (although some 6350 had no Explorer name on the dial like this example)**** and thus unofficially is the first proper Rolex Explorer for most collectors.

As with most early Rolex models, the dial is gilt (golden type print) and is a so called chapter ring (due to the ring around the outer circumference of the dial). Rolex also stamped it OCC or ‘Officially Certified Chronometer’.

In terms of the hour markers- the Explorer was the inspiration for all legendary dials that would come afterwards including the 6200 Submariner and the 5513 ‘Explorer dial’. The 6350 dial is among the most beautiful in terms of simplicity and readability and thus its appeal.

This is my journey to build my Explorer 6350 .

This project started off with a DM sent off to the master machinist, JMB We discussed what I was looking for and some of the specifics that made the 6350 unique . The early Rolex cases were supplied by BREVET at the time and I felt it was important to have the proper markings and crown for the build. Both between the lugs and on the case back. JMB took up the challenge and he did not disappoint!

The one thing you may notice about the 6350 is that it has a thick bezel. This was offered on only the 6350 Described as “fugly” by Justin he made one that is identical to the original and fits the T21 crystal perfectly. The proportions to the case and height in relation to the crystal are spot on. This was an important detail to me as there have been a few previous 6350 builds in the past that lacked this detail and I felt it was important as I wanted this build to be as close to original as possible.
Seeing the Bezel in person I think it looks great and along with the domed crystal really show its “bubble back “ lineage but yet somehow look modern in appearance A Timeless design .

It took a couple of days for JMB to get it done and send me pics of his finished work. Very happy with how it looked I paid the man and he sent it out. Receiving it a few days later I can say that it looks better in person. You knocked it out of the park and I can’t thank you enough my friend!

Next were the dial and hands.

The 6350 came with two variations. :

Pencil hands The long merc hand and needle minute and lollipop seconds.
:
I chose the latter. The Merc hands are a definite design cue for Rolex but I wanted this piece to be unique in every way and liked how the pencil hands were shared with the 6204 submariner and the seconds hand that had the pip at the very end that tracked along the chapter ring of the dial.
Raffles stocks these hands in the gold with aged lume so it was perfect. I also sourced the much needed BREVET + Crown from Ken also.

Movement:
I had 3 options.
A296 Rolex Movement. ( Very rare, Expensive to buy, parts and service also expensive)
Seiko 7S26 movement. (low beat , no hack or hand wind)
ETA 2824-2 ( high beat but hand wind and easy to service and replace)
I decided to go with the 2824-2 ETA as I had one from a recent pick up . The watch I got from another forum is an early 1016 with a aged dial and hands , and a ver 1 JMB case with bubbled case back. After wearing this watch a couple of weeks it just didn’t scratch that itch for me.
Unfortunately nothing unique or exciting there. I went with a dependable favourite I would however one day love to source an A296 movement for this. But I will need to save my pennies.

Dial:
I really shook the bushes on this I contacted a number of people on the forums to see if they had one in their parts bin or knew where to find one. After coming up dry in my searches I ended up sourcing the dial from Vietnam. The hub of high end watch parts . I put in my order, and a little over a week later I received QC pics . The dial looked good in the pics but I was concerned about the color of the lume it looked more orange than I wanted… Thankfully this was just the lighting .

When it arrived I was blown away with the quality and appearance of the dial. Just beautiful and it exceeded my expectations.!! Big time!
The lume is a toasted almond colour….beautiful crisp gilt text …and that honeycomb …just perfect. The dial is glossy which I was not expecting and was considering a quick spray of matt lacquer to dull it down, until I test fit the dial in the case and seen how the domed crystal and dial catch the light. Its magnificent !!

I was planning on sending this away to a builder if I experienced any snags. Dial fit case...check. Lume on hands match dial, check.... This appeared to be a straight forward build so I figured I would do it myself.

I pulled the 1016 apart for the movement The 1016 dial and hands are available if anyone is looking for a nicely aged look. I think I’m gonna hold onto the ver 1 JMB CASE as I think I may want to build a pre explorer bubble back down the road.

Waffle dial is on a Rolex plate so I had to snip the feet and use dial dots.

Under my bright light the lume still appears bright but in person its a warm toasted almond colour which is exactly what I wanted. The dial is just awesome and set this reference apart from any other Explorer in my opinion. Its why I had to have one!

Fit the dial to the movement with dial dots. Next were the hands. The hands were a snug fit. The minute hand popped off twice. Never had that happen before. A bit of persuasion and I got them on
Aged the lume on dial and hands. Hands are ever so slightly lighter but I’m cool with it. I really like these 6204 hands as they are uncommon from the typical Merc hand set. The seconds hand with the pip at the end looks great as it goes around the chapter ring.

Dropped it into the case and buttoned it up and she’s done !!

Love how the dial captures the light.

Fit to a WSO rivet bracelet and it’s done !!!

A few minor adjustments needed. The hands aren’t lined up perfectly but I’ll make those adjustments later. Today I am just armoured with the watch

Absolutely thrilled with how this build came together. Big thanks to JMB For the case set and to the forum. This community is a great resource for allowing us to get our hands on and enjoy incredibly rare time pieces such as this

These pieces are incredibly rare as a small number were made. Because of that. In today’s market. The 6350., depending on condition will trade for 50-80 thousand USD. i know own one for a fraction of that price. I couldn’t be happier.

Thanks for the read and as always. Questions and comments welcome.

Cheers

I concur 100% with your choice of hands, unique, classy and beautiful.
the honeycomb is the explorer to have imho, maybe along with a tropicalized later one.
well done and wear it with pride!

Thanks guys.. I am quite stoked with how it turned out....had a few mins yesterday to snap a few more proper pics so I want to share....this thing is crazy...for a simple explorer it sure packs a lot of character!

Ive aged it slighting with some scuffs and scratches and I now consider it done. I will let the daily wear and enjoyment do the rest!!

Another successful build completed ..

Amazing! Which Vietnam source did you use for the dial?

I'm wondering this too.

It's a really great looking watch, the dial is a thing of beauty.

That brings me to question someone here might be able to help with. I'm interested in the 6202 Turn-o-Graph and I'm wondering, if a turnograph bezel could be acquired or fabricated to gen specs, would it fit on an explorer style case such as this, or would it stick out past the case edges (or otherwise appear inaccurate)? To me the 6202 case looks identical to one like this, but it's hard to tell just from reference pictures online.

I considered starting a 6202 build in the past but decided against it due to all the custom work that would be required, but it seems like this 6350 was no less challenging a build, and came off extremely well.

Fantastic post. I had a post on my 6350 build on the old RWI but seems no longer. You've built one that's far most accurate. Congrats!

Thank you!! You’re build was a big inspiration for me today n this project. I think I’ve saved every pic that you’ve posted of your piece.
