I'm looking at building a 1016 and I'm curious what movement I should put in this watch.

The best and period correct would be a Low-Beat movement.
The Gen 1016 had the 1570 movement with 19.600 // an ETA 2846 for example has 21.600 => very similar and both low-beat movements
Also period correct for the ETA 2846 is the time-setting direction (counter clockwise) also same as the cal. 1570 from the 1016 EX1 = also period correct than.

Hi Drummania I'm thinking of this movement for my upcoming Explorer 1016 (the slower VPH will make it closer to vintage), but some concerns,
  1. Has it maintained good time (given the cheaper price?)
  2. It is serviceable?
  3. Was it hard to mount?
Thanks.

1. Not sure. This was sold long time ago.
2. Should be.
3. No. The movement has no screw holes. I used a plastic ring to mount it.

1570 stem height is only relevant if you use a 1570-compatible case, which is pretty rare, although such animals do exist. Case and movement options are linked, so start with one or the other, then the remaining choice/options is/are pretty much made for you.

But as this is such an elusive number, I double-dog-dare someone to post the true stem height of a 1570 here. Just because it comes up now and again.

The basic movement rings don’t have holes in them. They have little dents for the tab to go on.

For the movement, depends on the case. What case are you using?

if you can't fit an ETA 2840 inside the case, then i recommend those china lowbeat 2824-2 clone + ETA 2840 combined setting lever (for two stops: one stem position for manual wind and the other stem position for setting time):

- China lowbeat 2842-2 clone = https://www.ebay.com/itm/Direct-Repl...MAAOSw6ShZW28a (note: most of its internal parts, including the stem, isn't compatible with normal 2824-2 movements... but it gets the job done)
- ETA 2840 combined setting lever = just buy the cheapest (broken or working) ETA 2840 movement on ebay and take its combined setting lever out

I fitted one of these China lowbeat 2824-2 clone movement inside a vietnam 5513 case before. You will need to modify the movement ring slightly so that the movement ring is compatible with the different movement tab/ screw location:

The movement baseplate does not have screw holes for the tabs.

I was using JMB case.

That is odd. I thought damn near every mechanical movement had screw holes for mounting on their base plates. The only ones I haven’t seen them on are quartz watches. I think even 2813s have screw holes for tabs.

I have heard elsewhere that some cheap movements used in Swatches do not, FWIW.

Oops, no, that was dial feet. Apologies for incorrect info.

You were right instead. There are indeed ETA movement used in Swatches that have no screw holes for mounting tabs. I had one, though now I'm not sure of the caliber, maybe it was 2783 or something similar

If one goes with an ETA 2824-2, what hands height set would you recommend? H4?
