Silix isn't a bad place to start. The biggest problem for me was the lug chamfers. I tried cutting them with a dremel and the results were pitiful. But there are people here who can do them well.

If you find that you want greater accuracy the only way to go is the Vietnam cases, which are roughly 10x the price. For me it was worth it, but many are happy with the silix builds.

And the 7922 I built over the winter:

With a bit of work you can have respectable chamfers on a silix/cartel case too

but yes, Vietnam is the only way if you want a proper case and especially if you want a real gilt dial.
Very nice build btw! :)

Thanks mate, the dial is from rubyswatch (highly recommended, it looks like she has a 4-line with white text for sale now). I don't think this dial is all that accurate in terms of the heavily-serifed fonts, but it looks cool to me. A bit of ageing on the heavy gloss and lume plots would go a long way.

Hands are a mix; hour from jkhorological, minute from Yuki, second is an old HR big ball. I'm not happy with these hands but I don't really know of any better options available.

Has anyone tried the new HR hands? The silver ones are stated to be 13mm, while the gold are 12mm, oddly enough.

Ah, great work on those chamfers.. now why didn't mine turn out like that . You really need a steady hand with whatever cutting tool you use.

Also, you raise a good point. The silix watches posted just now were mainly the custom decal printed gilt dials, and that is the only option if you want a gilt dial in a silix build. Something to keep in mind Darklite69

It is possible to get some pretty good chamfers and lug shape out if a budget case but Vietnam cases are better (last 2 pictures,)

Anyone know a source for plexi crystals that will fit gen spec 6538 cases? I've cracked 3 GS T19s now, trying to shave them down to fit...

You need a T21 not a T19 as far as I remember. Clarks and Cousins have them.

I really like the look of these big crowns. Are the assembled 6538's on Silix's site (21j movement) a good starting point for a decent looking watch? I see mention of Silix cases but not sure if the assembled watches are the same as just the case Silix sells.

I am really just looking to either get a aged dial or age the dial myself and scuff up the outside case and band. Other than that, I would be happy with the watch without making the minute changes to make it more 1:1.

Thanks!

Silix is a fine base. Mine is a Cartel base with a high beat 2836 only because I like that movement and also it takes Helenarou dials and hands, but they are similar. Most of the modded 6538s you see here are Silix 21j based.
