I got this JKF 5512 from Andrew at TrustyTime and am planning to go for a gilt dial and pointed crown guards.

I plan to make this dial using the no film decal technique.

I have got a 700 crown from Athaya and will swap that with the trip lock crown.

I sent a message to Crownart Customs about getting a bezel insert, but he is way out of my budget. The Vietnam ones seem to be about $90 - this seems a lot more reasonable, though I expect there will be another ~$40 shipping to add.

I have also seen that Clark’s seem to do a good replacement bezel, but I can’t find this anywhere. It’s not on their eBay store. I can’t find anything on the cousins website either (I’m UK based).

So, my main questions would be bezel related - what’s the best replacement and is there any alternative to the Vietnam bezel insert.

The best would be to get an insert from milk from Taiwan.

But I am asking myself, where will you get a 5512 dial that is somehow correct. I have not seen any dials that are somehow half correct.

Often the font is silver or gold but never together correct like it should be.

I’m pretty sure the dial above is correct - I’m aiming for a 1962 PCG build - I’ve got the image from this website:

http://www.5513mattedial.com/5512/1961-1962.html

It seems pretty comprehensive - I chose this dial as I will be making it myself using the decal dial method. Here is one of my trial runs using the unmodified Bart Cordell dial.

What’s the best way to order a milk dial? Does he have a website or should I just DM?

Ahhh cool, I didn’t know you are making it on your own. Looking forward to the result. The best is to write milk a PM.

Not sure if he does dials, but insert wise I’d second the recommendation. I haven’t had a sub insert, but had a few 1675 fat font inserts from him, and they are very good for the money.
milk051506 is his handle.

deadpan - I meant insert not dial. Thanks for the advice, I’ve sent him a message.

chrome72 - it’s the film free technique. I’m still playing with the temperature of the oven. I think I’ve been going a bit too hot and the toner has melted to the film. I think I may try longer at ~90°. I tried with a hairdryer, but that took ages to get it warm enough and it’s a pain holding everything.

Film free decal technique seems pretty easy at first glance but it proves to be a bit tricky at first trial.
From my own experience the best method is to make multiple steps from medium heat to high heat.
At a time the film will come off the support by itself ... time to peel it off completely.
Rinse the dial to remove the glue then heat it again around 200°C in an oven to fix the toner.

manodeoro when you say medium to high heat what do you mean? 70°-110°?

I use a ceramic hairdryer to heat the decal so sorry, no idea about which temperature.
I just set heat at max, air flow at medium and heat starting at a 20 cms distance from the dial then reduce the distance until the film peel off easily.

manodeoro ok, I’ll try and play around with things a bit more

What bezel rings are people using these days? The cartel one isn’t great. I’ve had a look on eBay and the are a few there, but they don’t look that close to gen either.

The cartel bezel ring isn't great but can be improved if you sand it all around to reduce its diameter a bit ...
Doing this will create a matte flat part all around it and makes the "crown seat" more viewable and the crownguards will seem at bit longer
You can also sand down the dial seat a bit and chamfer the crown to make the crownguards seem longer

I don't have 5512 pics available (I'm at the office) but here are comparison pics of a Gen Tudor 9401/0 and a Cartel Tudor (both unmodified and modded)

Another comparison pic ... Carel Tudor on the left an Gen on the right
It shows how the bezel ring is to large, crown is too fat and crownguards are too short

And now pics of the Cartel 9401/0 case after modding :
- dial seat sanded down (more or less 0.8mm)
- crownguards reworked
- lugs drilled for 2mm fat springbars
- crown chamfered (on the side that "touches" the case)
- bezel ring sanded down (to 39.52mm ... 5513 bezel ring measured at 39.42.mm)

manodeoro thanks for the advice, though I think this is a different case to your one. The bezel is the same diameter as gen (although a different shape) so I don’t think reducing it will be much help. The crown guards also seem to be a bit closer to gen.

I tried your advice about chamfering the crown, though I think I may have gone a touch too far.

I was planning to drill the lugs and start making the crown guards pointy this weekend but my wife and kids had other ideas!

On another note - does anyone know a good source for blank dials? I can’t find anywhere to get a 26mm dial. Ideally uk based

Raffles-time on eBay sells blank dials both 26 and 28.5mm ... you also can buy cheaper ones from AliExpress ...
Just get a confirmation about :
- the dial feet position (most blank dials come with 4 dial feet for ETA 2824.- and DG2813 but it's better to confirm)
- the material used to make the dial plate (should be copper if you want to make a gilt dial)
You can soak the Cartel dial in acetone to remove all the printings and ink, sand it until you get copper only and polish it.

Sand one of your dials blank and try to put a decal on it ...
If the pinholes are located where the lume plots should be you can use it :
- fill the pinholes with cyanolite
- sand your dial plate down to 26mm
- polish mirror
- film free decal
- etc ...

Thanks for the offer of the dials - I have a 31mm one spare so will chop it up and grind it down.

I’ve done a bit of CG work today.

I think I need to work a bit on the transition between the side of the case and the top of the CG.

I think I probably need to thin them a bit too, but feel that I may mess it up.

I’ve had a look at some bezels - Vietnam seems too expensive about $300 it seems

I’ve found these on eBay:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Steel-be...2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BEZEL-RI...2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0

The first one is from watchparts24 and the second from wholesaleoutlet990.

Does anyone have any experience with these bezels as the pictures don’t really show all the angles I’d like to see.
