My quest for knowledge of Rolex brand and its very diverse models is still going on. A few months ago I saw an offer for a Pepsi 2018 from a TD. Not really knowing what I bought( I just liked the appearance), I tried to gather information about this model and its history.

The Rolex GMT Master was developed in cooperation with Pan Am. As in the 1940s and 50s flying distances got longer and the pilots travelled through multiple time zones, Pan Am asked Rolex in the 1950s to develop a watch which could tell different times simultaneously.

The first GMT (Ref. 6542) was a regular Turn-O-Graph (Ref. 6202) with a different bezel and a modified movement.

The rotating bezel on the fledgling Turn-O-Graph was the key element that opened up a new level of practicality for a host of demanding occupations.

Apart from helping divers keep track of their elapsed time underwater, the feature found a perfect utility on the newly-released GMT-Master. With a bi-color border, it served as an elegant way for international travelers to visualize whether their eventual destinations were waiting for them in the daytime or the night.

The Rolex GMT was designed as an aviator watch: The newly introduced fourth hand allowed the display of an additional time, with the

corresponding numbermarkings on the outer bezel. Pilots used the second time to display the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which led to the name Rolex GMT Master. Altough Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) got replaced 1972 in the Aviation Industry by Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the term GMT is still known and kept as part of the name of the GMT Master, altough pilots nowadays use it to set UTC.

MSRJI.jpg

It was powered by a caliber 1050 25 jewel automatic.

The next model was the Rolex GMT Master with reference 1675.

The production period started in 1959 and ended in 1980. The movement was a caliber 1565 (1959-1964) 18000A/h and in 1965 the caliber 1575 (1965-1980) 19600A/h (hacking introduced 1971) was introduced.

The Ref. 16760 is the first GMT Master II. It is nicknamed Fat Lady because of it's extra thick case. First GMT with white gold indices borders and sapphire crystal, steel was the only option.

It was only offered with the red/black bezel, which was also a new combination, also known as the Coke bezel.

Interesting reading, here you can see how things have changed since the first GMT.
I've always liked all these GMT models but the 6542 and the root beer (first model) are my favourites.
Thanks for sharing.

Yep, absolutely. Since it took Rolex several years to get the ceramic bezel coloring right, we might have to wait "some" time until the rep makers will achieve some progress in this. The GMF/... equivalents have a completely different coloured bezel atm, not even close to gen. Let the waiting game begin...

Nice read. If I were to have just one Rolex it'd be the new Pepsi Jubilee. Prefer the new blue and red to the old as well. God that ceramic is fucking beautiful.
Having a little sub fatigue....
ARF needs to makes this now, a SD43 level rep preeeesse.

Sadly the GMT rep bicolor ceramics are probably going to be like the Hulk inserts and never quite get there. Aluminum inserts are so much easier to rep and no paint mod needed!

One way to tell for certain on any Rolex is the rounded corner hour markers at 3, 6, 9, and 12. Rep dials have pointy hour markers at those positions. This is really apparent on the 6-digit models. The pics I posted previously are my gen, the PCL bracelet is ARF, some of the inserts are aftermarket, of course.

This is a rep

I’ve already read about pointy markers but it wasn’t clear in my mind. It is now.
Thank you for your explanation!

Great source for information. Thanks!

It makes me confirm that I want a Pepsi 16710 but they are not so common on TD websites.

Most of topics show Franken ones. I’m not ready yet because of my lack of skills but where to start? BP?
