I want to start a vintage sub or GMT. I’m going to start with a case and then build up from there. This will be my first time going with a vintage build and I’m looking for some insight as to which of these would be the easiest to build. Also, is there a rep movement that supports the proper GMT function? I searched the forum for some guides on builds and didn’t see anything so if there is already a thread out there, sorry for doubling up. Any feedback would be awesome! Thanks

Which vintage GMT do you want to build?
A 1675? If yes, than a DG3804 could do - or you go the route with an ETA2846 movement with additional GTM module from a 2836 GMT movement.
For the 1675 with these movements you always have the correct handstack.

If I got GMT I was thinking the slightly newer looking 16750. I’ll look at the sticky of the DG3804 movement and check that out. I saw a good one someone did with a 1680 case but I lost the thread and it was before I knew how to subscribe. I also like the no date 1680 if I would go Sub.

There is no 1680 no date sub.
I think you mean the 5512 or 5513 sub which are from same era / period

Yes, I was using the ref number based on intime’s webpage, they call it the no date 1680 . I just read the article on bobs and 5512 or 5513 are what I would be looking to do.

Speaking of Intime, I found the vintage case on Ryan’s site and they also have one on Puretime I have seen, I think I’m going to start with that as the base and do the vintage no date submariner. Does anyone know if this is a good case to start with?

If this is your first foray into building, modding - just buy either a cartel 1675 or a cartel 5513/1680. Both are "ok" bases to start with to try your hand at swapping dials, modding cases, etc. Doesn't break the bank and it should be fun.

A fully modded Cartel based watch with a new dial should run you about $500-$700 if you do it yourself.

From there on up you can get a Vietnam case for about $600-$700 bucks - but those are finicky to build and require a lot of modification to add movement, stem positioning, etc.

Great info! I see you’re selling a cartel case. Would those larger holes on the bottom of the case you’re selling keep someone from using a ss bracelet on it?

I found a vintage BP factory 1675 on the gate for $144 bucks. Is anyone familiar with the watch? I don’t care about the movement really just the case if anyone has any feedback on if it’s good or not. Thanks

I would go with go with the cartel watch aswell for your first shot. You can shape those 1680 cases (its mainly that or 1665 seadweller shape) into nearly every vintage sub you want.

Take my last try for example, just for the side view. See those totally different results in shape and thickness from all the same case:

In my opinion even the stock dials aint bad (might be the only one here though). I repaint them a bit and after an ageing process you get pretty solid vintage watches. For the dial options check this thread (pricing outdated):

Cartel is a great way to practice, before going the phong or franken route.

Good luck!

I have started with an BP1655 Ex II case, which is the Same as the 1675 case BP is offering. But seems there is more material on the cg‘s to work on imo

Added a gen 6mm crown, clarks bezel and 116 plexi, vietnam dial.
Working all with an DG3804 and raffles hands.
Dial and hands got a relume.

Did quite alot casework and ended like this. Note: the whole thing cost me 550-600$.

Imo it’s the best/cheapest way to get a half decent 1675 without going the vietnam case route.

I have the perfect solution to have both. You can just buy the new BP 1675. It is a gmt and even offers a helium escape valve. The best from both worlds!

Does some have a link to see a stock cartel 1675? I am gmt infected aswell now. Thanks

I have been wanting to build a franken 16753 but have yet to find the right base to start off with. Would like to get better than a cartel case and less than a Phong
