So I was bored last night, so I decided to put something together with spare parts in my box, and this is what I came up. A 1955 Rolex Submariner model no. 6536 with tropical dial.

You know, now that I've done some more research, this could actually be either a 6536 or a 5508. Most likely closer to a 5508.

I had previously tried wood stains but that failed. Finally I got a can of flat red/brown primer spray paint, held it about a foot and a half away from the dial, and lightly spritzed it until I got the desired effect. So you could basically create any gradation of tropical dial you wish. It won't pass expert inspection of course, but it's pretty good for the price and effort.

Thanks, mikeshark. I've got a few more dials hanging around that are begging to be tropical-ized.

No, thank you!!..i have got some ideas for a project myself using your 5508 as inspiration...gonna try your tropical dial method..re-paint hour markers and add vintage hands set with white lolli-pop seconds hand from tiger concept...pop it in a beat up case, over polished the sides and a fresh bezel with red triangle insert...thanks again and keep modding!!

I used flitz metal polish on the case and bracelet. It works wonders and really gives it that old over-polished look. Good luck with your build and post some pics.

Hey man

Sorry to revive an age-old thread but, could you repost that picture of the watch you made this post about? I really wanna test it out on a 6538 dial I ****** up, and might just try to spray paint it brown but I wanna see the outcome first.

Thank you!
