Well I have no doubt that this happens at the airport. It really depends if your appearance matches a 10k watch. Now I don‘t know how this person looks like but a young person with a Rolex will be checked way more often than the 50 year old three piece suit business traveller.
But it sounds that customs officers only know the crappy fake (not reps) from the beaches.
As a frequent before covid traveller I believe that this can happen.
