As a newbie in Rep watches as well as the community I have a few questions to understand where most people stand. I've come across some interesting as well as strange individuals in the forum and I want to learn more what a Rep watch means to you. Based on each person describing what it means for them, it will give us a better view of where most people stand which allows us to learn more about ourselves.
1. Do you buy Rep watches because you can't afford the Gens?
2. What is the real reason you buy Reps for?
3. Are you comfortable wearing any Rep as long as it's a good Rep even if the price is over $50k+?
4. Would you tell anyone about your Rep or you try to keep as secret as possible?
5. If someone compliments your Rep watch, for example "Wow I love your watch! I once bought a Rep but it looked so different from the real deal!". Do you instantly tell them it's a Rep or you just take the compliment?
Here are my answers for every question:
1. I only buy Reps of watch I currently own or can afford the Gen, I've just made my first Rep purchase today!
2. The main reason I'm interested in Rep watches is because of my lifestyle as I often find myself more concerned about damaging or losing my watches than my own comfort sometimes, mostly night time in chaotic environments I find myself in (day time and for meetings I wear Gens, when partying Reps from now on...). Some people might say "watches are to be worn", why did you buy a watch if you don't feel comfortable using? I don't buy watches just to wear but as an investment as well, or else I'd buy a $100 watch that does the same thing or nothing at all as my £1500 phone (10x cheaper) has instant hour in any time zone and answer any questions I have on demand, ah and I probably could launch a man to Mars if I wasn't so ignorant like most, NASA launched a man to the moon with less CPU power than our phones...The Reps allow me to focus and enjoy the moment and if I damage or lose it at least it's £500 instead of £10k lost. Sleeping after partying may not be as comfortable when you're concerned about your wrist and have no idea what the girls might do. ;p
3. No, I only wear Reps of watches I own. As I said I just bought my first Rep today (waiting for QC). I would never feel comfortable wearing a Richard Mille Rep hence the Gen ones are way above my Budget for watches as for now.
4. As soon as the subject escalates sure. In a rare and extreme scenario for example... Let's say on my nights out someone is offering me £10k in cash in front of me for my watch that I got for £7200, then I will tell them this is a Rep and if you can wait a bit I can get you my real one and explain the reason I'm wearing the Rep (as I mentioned above).
5. I take the compliment or else why would I be wearing or choosing a certain Rep over another quality-wise, it's to be as close to the Gen as possible and seem as if I wear my Gen throughout the whole day. As I mentioned before, I will try to wear a Rep (once I receive mine) pretty much to forget the fact I'm wearing a watch, so compliments will be taken as "Thanks mate and whatever" to close the case. I don't want to focus on the watch and if people think it's a Gen, it's not my job to educate the average Joe, he has to do his homework the same way we all do ours.
PS: This is not to create any sort of name calling or conflict amongst ourselves (before the weirdos, as I met a few around here to show up!). Just talk about yourself and what Rep means for you personally!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
