Absolutely worth it. As sexy as gens are, just remember that the price you pay is covering all the maker’s operating costs including their marketing expense (which for your Rolex, omega, etc are very high). Someone has to pay for Clooney and Daniel Craig to wear omegas while still providing for a solid profit margin. That someone is the people who pony up the cash for a gen.

I guess I understand what everyone is saying, maybe because I haven't had my first high end rep yet to appricate it.

the only reason I got into this world was because recently i bought a tag rep that I don't even wear because you look at it and you would just go HA that's a fake.

So i started searching for high end reps, and was hesitant to buy aswel coz I didn't wanna spend 348usd, get it and not wear it because of it looking fake and wasted money again I guess haha.

as a fellow aussie I feel your pain. Our dollar is so worthless that the cost of a decent rep ends up being very expensive. And its only going to get worse with the Corona virus. Australia feels very much like a 3rd world country at the moment, especially with such a pathetic useless happy clapper running the country.

For what it is (engineering marvel copying something to such a close degree), my view is the price we pay generally is fair. But then to mod at a cost of 2x 3x 4x or higher, is not worth it in my books. The more you mod and add to the cost the fewer and fewer buyers there are out there that actually appreciate and understand what you've done and willing to pay for it. You may say I don't intend to sell my modded reps... but even then there is inherent value to everything you own and the value is $0 if no one wants to buy it regardless of how much you spent in first place.
So that's my word of caution for noobs regarding modding.

It depends I would say, from a purely mathematical point of view you get the look and feel for a fraction of the gen cost, so yes.

Then it's up to you evaluating the marginal utility, I mean someone is happy even without a watch or with a $10 casio.

You can sell it on this forum if you don’t like it, usually for what you paid minus shipping or a small loss.

I’ve been through so many watches now because of this site and the ability to sell to someone else who may like something you don’t. It’s also allowed me to write off plenty of gens I thought I would have liked to have purchased too.

I think there answer to the OP's question is: it depends.....
for some, I think the answer is unquestionably yes and for others there answer might be no.

I have owned 60+ watches over these past 4 yrs. For me there answer is 100% yes. Out of the 60, about 2/3 or roughly 40 of then have been high end reps. This forum has enabled me to buy and sell basically at will & discover what I like. If I buy a brand new rep for $400 from a TD here I spend a total of $400 + $35 for shipping and another $15 for WU fees so maybe $450 & I find that as long as the watch is undamaged I can probably sell it for around $375 + shipping. For around $75 ish/watch I get to have fun with this hobby & for me it is totally "worth" it. Furthermore, if you buy selectively from the m2m area here it can be considerably less, roughly maybe $25/ watch.

Others would say $400 for a watch that doesn't do nearly as good a job as my smartphone at keeping time. WTF, why would anyone spend $400 on something that doesn't even keep good time & I already have something that does a better job with NO additional money being spent.

A case can be made for both sides.

I think timnic54 was on the right track. What does "worth" mean, and how is it applied to rep versus gen watches. The dictionary meaning is "the level at which something deserves to be valued or rated.". Is the level of value of a rep watch equivalent to that same value of a gen? Value can be measured tangibly by its monetary value, or intangibly by measures of affection, satisfaction and other qualities. Different people will put different emphasis on these qualities to make that determination. Think of people who spend large amounts of money on restoration of a watch that has sentimental value only. For them, it was worth it; they'll never recover that money in a sale.

For me, I am getting my rep Daytona primarily for the quality of movement within the watch and secondarily for the beauty of the watch. The Noob 3140 is as close as I can get at the moment to a Rolex 3140 for the money I have available to spend. The 3140 is a robust movement and I'm hoping that, with care and attention over time, I can enjoy that same robustness, accuracy and longevity in the rep movement as I might have if I had bought the genuine product. So, I measure worth in the watch's ability to maintain good time; I'm measuring the primary worth through satisfaction. If the watch does not perform to my expectations, I'll feel that it is not worth.

I also enjoy the look of the Daytona and I'm hoping that the Noob will live up to my expectations of that beauty. I'm not so concerned with the minutia about reproduction accuracy as what consumes many others here on this board. If the watch looks good to me (that's the key phrase), then it will be worth the outlay. I'm not out to impress others about the luxury items I can buy or trying to fool someone into thinking this is the real thing. Buying the rep for me is a stepping stone to an eventual purchase of the genuine article, once the Rolex market settles down, but I get to enjoy the watch now.

the only place to sell on reps would be on forums like these - without this forum, it would be difficult to find someone who would buy what we call a "rep" or what the general public calls a "fake" for hundreds of euros/dollars/pounds. We are a select group who value replica watches and would pay hundreds for it.

Thats true. But Hi end Gens are equally difficult to sell at anything like good money, unless you are selling in the right environment, so in that way reps are really no different.
Rolex sport models and SS Pateks aside . Selling a Hi end gen is quite difficult.

This - times 10. If anyone thinks you're loosing money by re-selling reps, try that with a Zenith, IWC or Breitling you bought for 8000 USD. Easiest way to get rid 3000 Dollars. Apart from getting married...

I couldn't agree more with the above.

I just went through my spreadsheet and sorted a few different ways. For example I sorted by Brand New Reps bought and sold and I sorted by Reps bought and sold on m2m and also with Gens. With more than a dozen examples of each Brand new reps bought from TD and then sold here in m2m averaged about a $50 loss. Reps bought and sold both on m2m averaged about a $10 loss. I am very close to this sort of very minimal loss when buying gens via m2m over on WUS, but I don't even want to admit how much I have lost selling Gens that I bought new. Lets just say this: Expect a minimum of 20-25% loss when buying a new Gen and that is when it is still relatively new and in really good shape when you go to sell it.

Id rater spend a few hundred on a nice quality rep I'm happy with and use the other 10k to invest/save/use on other necessary things. Tying up 10k in a watch just feels insane to me.
