The only nice Sinn in my opinion is 140 st.... and it goes under 5000 dollars.
If chrono is your thing and you like thick watch, then Fortis B-42 is nice.
Girard Perregaux ferrari is always nice and a lot cheaper than 5000 dollars. Sporty, chrono, normal size.
All of the above can't be had in rep.

I think the most fun watch is Corum bubble.

Consider a grand Seiko. No good replicas and the finish and craftsmanship is amongst the best available. pictures don't do it justice.

Other option is a speedmaster professional. Again, not repped well, very well made, timeless style and IMHO very comfortable to wear. I'm not biased or anything just because I own one.....and yes I saw the exclusion of Omega and the follow up reason due to super reps.... there are no decent, let alone super reps, so it should fit your stated criteria.

Do you know what....buy a Cartier Santos, it is different, some technology in the bracelet, blue hands....and don't forget about the history. The first pilot watch...

Seiko, Oris(are they in house calibre?). Best investment I guess would be Tudor tho, and I don’t think they are really repped that well.....

I believe Oris uses a Sellita SW200, not sure what in-house modifications they do to it. I do love the look of the big Oris watches, depth gauge and pro diver etc.

To me, but im very biased, its the omega seamaster smpc 300. Its classy, sporty and was very innovative for its time. They have discontinued it, so it will likely keep its value and prob increase in value aswell. I got mine in a very good condition for around 2500euros .

Nomos world time with blue dial. Second hand it's available at a good price.

I second the speedmaster though simply because the reps are not close and it is versatile/classic.

Why not try Sinn? Great brand with great value. I've owned the 103 and the 356. Both were fantastic watches.

My vote for Sinn as well, cracking watches for the money

"Below $5k" is pretty broad.. One could argue that something like a Seiko SKX is the 'best' watch under 5k, as it's well under $5k. Should it be new? Pre-owned? What's important? Better would maybe be "what's the best NEW gen around $5k"? If so, I'd say a Rolex OP. In fact anything 5-13k I'd say Rolex.

Disagree, Grand Seiko blows them out of the water on finishing and dial details at that price point. Those zaratsu hands...

Ball new GMT with a movement similar to patek Philippe.
