Great thread. I think we should all add examples of this sort of thing when it happens in our own life. Here's my example. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed yours.

I was in Aldi in Milton Keynes grabbing a few essentials. After filling my trolley, I couldn't decide which queue to stand in. I ended up choosing badly (I was behind this old woman who was taking forever, so even though the queue was shorter, it was definitely not quicker. Lesson learnt). Anyway, I decided to change queues and ended up behind this chap who was wearing an Explorer 1. It looked good, I couldn't see any obvious tells, but he was shopping in Aldi. I don't mean to judge him, but I just can't decide if it was Gen. I followed him to the cast park where he got into a six year old E Class Merc if that helps.

Great thread. I hope you enjoyed my story.

Thanks for sharing. Great story.

Recently, a guy wearing a SS Rolex Daytona availed of our bar association's free legal aid service.

I used to live in a multimillion waterfront property, drove a nice, rare car, had no debts, bought what I wanted.
Then I bought a rep watch, and another, and another...they’re cheap I told myself, it’s okay, and another, and another...they’re cheap, it’s not a problem, and another, and another...I could stop if I wanted to, it’s not a problem.
I’m sitting in my new home...newspaper blanket on a park bench and eating leftover hamburger from the rubbish bin now, looking at my next rep purchase. I could stop if I wanted to. It’s not a problem.

Then the shopping cart bum walks past with the new noob yachtmaster 904l and you just look at each other and give a masterful nod both thinking just one more rep ...

Thanks for sharing. Great story.

Wasn't it! I've got some more supermarket queuing stories (different supermarkets obviously - it would be totes boring if they were all in Aldi) that I'm happy to share if you'd like? They're at least as interesting as the OPs original story.

In my opinion it´s all abour the crystal! The genuine watches let the hands reflect the sunlight onto the wall, the replicas not!

In my opinion sometimes it is better to wear a replica in public. I was robbed on the street and my genuine Rolex was gone... So i started to by a good replica of every genuine watch I have to wear in public, and no one ever recognizes.

I was in Bali past year with wife & kid. Great place.

Spotted on one of the cab driver's wrist a daytona while I was wearing my spanking new Noob white face. I looked at my watch, his, his face and through the loop a few times. We locked eyes to see who blinked first. I sort of felt my wisdoms were gnawing on something like bristle, turned out to be my heart which was about to leap out of my mouth as my peripheral vision was scanning on the chaos to happen on the road.

I blinked.

If it looks the part, I tend to assume Gen, you have to realize most people don't have access to the level of Rep we are getting around here. Id say at least 95% of reps are complete trash that is easily spotted.

Lat year I was in Tasmania with the mrs at a fancy restaurant (aka terrible over priced food) and was flanked on both sides by two guys wearing rolex. One was a fake explorer 2, could tell from a mile off, the other guy had a sub that I assume was gen. Other easy tells for me are chronogrpahs that have seconds hands running with the wrong registers like 99% of fake daytonas.

The quality of the stuff we have here, I would very much struggle to identify as rep from a respectful distance.

This is the second scariest thing I have heard today....

I'm blind as a bat unless I got readers on. However, when a SE Asian family on vacation hop in my aircraft and I see so many patek philippes ticking the quartz tick... Then it's obvious... On the other hand when a guy buys the whole helicopter for his, ehem, girlfriend, and he's sporting a Hubelot skeleton, I'm straining to get a good look at it so I can drool a little.

This happens to me quite a bit. (I go to casinos a lot). Sitting at black jack tables, I’ve quite a few reps and some amazing gens. Was playing at a high limit table and guy had on a rhodium yachtmaster. I had on the noob version of it. I just said “hey. Love your watch” he says thanks and gives me an awkward look. Then he realized I was wearing the same one. Most people don’t know or care. For watch dorks like me (and prob most of you), they’re all good conversation starters.

I’ve seen some terrible 5 digit subs too. Those are usually ones where people try to flaunt it. I avoid those convos. They usually start out saying some shit like “love that Rolex man. Check mine out”. Smh.

Lots of people here with eagle eyes. Personally, I have yet to spot any rep in the wild, except for my own and the ones I bought and gave away to friends/relatives.

OP, as some have stated, most people really can't tell. The "judgement thing" is a sign of insecurity or youth I assume. Just wear your watch and enjoy!

Thats usually the give awy for me too - Gens will almost always allow a perfect reflection.
