There IS such a thing as too many watches.

I just bought a third watch box because I had extra watches just floating around.

Clearly, most of these watches really aren't getting used very much, if at all. It's just not possible. You can really only wear one at a time. Maybe two if you want to look stupid.

I thought to write about "how many is too many." And the answer to that clearly isn't "N+1" or "always one more than what I have right now"

I have a lot of cool watches, and in a way, it's neat to just have them. But from a a practical standpoint, having 50 watches or whatever other ridiculous number, doesn't really make a lot of sense.

What thoughts do you guys on this topic?

You can’t have too many of anything in my book. I will admit though, I recently went on a business conference in Vegas and I spotted a couple PAMs and one guy at the casino wearing a DSSD. Pretty much everything else were apple watches. I took my Daytona and a PAM 127 which was destroyed on accident by tsa.

My point I guess is while it was fun to sport a nice watch during a conference after 2 years of working from home, nobody really gave a shit and I kinda felt silly for bringing two watches.

That said, I will continue building my collection and try to make my selections based on how unlikely I will be to re-sell them. Buy them and keep them. 50+ is no big deal to me.

Would be curious to hear the story about TSA breaking your watch?

Nice to build a collection, one for everyday! I’m sure that those with many many watches don’t often wear half of them and have them merely to just “collect” and keep.

Same with many hobbies. A fine line between collecting or simply chasing the dragon so to speak. A couple of watches is enough for most.

I was recently speaking to a gentleman I occasionally see at the cigar shop. He had a interesting looking Invicta on (no judgments) After I commented on it he stated he had about 300 of them. His wife knew of about 100 of them. That’s quite a chore. ????

I like to think of watches as serving a specific niche:

One dress watch
One dive watch
One field watch
One slightly sportier dive watch
One Moonwatch because the history is so cool
One Datejust for the clout
etc, etc, etc

In all seriousness, I certainly (heavily) favor some watches more than other in my collection, which leaves me feeling a little guilty thinking back to the money I have spent accumulating my collection. I tend to sell the ones that don't get as much use...though I almost inevitably always end up buying another shortly after. So the cycle continues...

I used to think 15 was plenty.
That turned into 30 pretty quickly
Some I don’t wear as they are out of style or old but still remind me of good times when I wore them.
Some are too cheap or I got too good of a deal to sell, the parts/spare movement in them is worth more than the watch itself.

Then 50 became the norm.

After keeping them scattered throughout several drawers/ places/boxes, they were tricky to count and the number grew above 70.

Better cut back.

Sold 10, but seemed to find 20 more.

Do broken or parts watches still count?

What if they are no longer repped? What If I go through another Panerai craze, better keep them around just in case, seeing as you can’t find them easily.

Today the new “too many” is 100.
A few years ago it was 15.

Is there such a thing as too many?

Yes. I believe so. Definitely. Without a doubt. I get told this regularly by friends and family.

Do I have too many? Indeed I do.

I have far too many! I admit it. And many that haven’t been worn in years. Gen and rep.

For some reason I can’t bring myself to sell them though? I could make money, or even just ‘get’ money back on some.

But I do like my collection.

One day I’ll get around to thinning it (been saying that for too long!) However I’m a self confessed ‘hoarder’ of things I like… no I’m a collector! I collect things I like. It sounds better lol

And I’ve got zero idea what someone does for a living has to do with this question either. That makes zero sense to me

It's borderline too many when you have to move house or build an extension so you have a watch room, until that point it's not enough
