I am a very skinny guy with a wrist that has a girth of 14-15cm. Someone recommended 36mm watches for me but even with that size i believe it might be a bit too big. Plus how do the straps work, will a default strap be too big since my wrist is so skinny?

I dont want to buy a nice rep and then have it turn out to be too big

That's a small wrist, but I know people who wear 40 mm watches with 15/16 cm wrists. The stock strap that comes with the watch is not usually worth keeping, bracelets can be adjusted to fit your wrist, although large clasp mechanisms should be avoided as they will sit badly on your wrist.
