Black market paua (abalone) ring smashed

Fisheries officers and police have smashed a black market paua ring after a man was found with almost 200kg of the shellfish in early morning raids. His arrest followed a two-month coordinated investigation into the illegal supply and sale of black market paua in the Wellington region, Ministry of Fisheries' Investigations Manager, Mike Green, said. Up to 35 officers, including police, searched private homes and a business in Wellington and the Opotiki areas during today's raids. They seized seized five vehicles, two freezers, money and assorted dive gear.

Paua haul found near Titahi Bay.

Wellington fisheries officers have discovered an estimated $25,000 worth of paua hidden under bushes near Titahi Bay north of the city. Many of the 2,500 paua were under-sized, and the quantity is more than 200 times the daily quota for a recreational fisherman. Fisheries officers said the haul was probably bound for the black market and would have ended up in restaurants in New Zealand or Asia.

I think those were gens, intended for smuggling abroad. Problem is, you get no warranty on those things and the QC might be same as from our dealers (bad to nonexistent).
