Just got this in from the M2M.

Upon initial inspection, I saw that whoever built this watch really... um... wasn't too caring of quality, let's say.

- bent hands
- lint on the dial and crystal
- dirt/smudges on the dial
- smudgy hands
- dirty bracelet & caseback gasket

Time to work.

maybe you can see it now?

EEK.

Probably cannot see it but the hands are bent upwards and the seconds hand is entirely sunk into the hole. I guess whoever put this together was having issues with space between the hand and the dial so they bent the minute hand up to clear the dial.

It needed a correct ETA dial spacer which I had and added it, that helped immensely.

Ta-daaaaa.

Much better.

Off to the chopping block it goes! I went too crazy buying watches this week and I prefer my SD4K to this.

PS: The white specs on the after pics were on the outside, I just wiped them off.

To recap, I did:

- Clean the hands with Rodico and straighten them.
- Clean the dial and inner crystal with Rodico and my little air pumpy thingy.
- Added a correct ETA spacer for correct hand fitment.
- Ultrasonically cleaned the bracelet.
- Lubed the gaskets
- Cleaned up the caseback and back with my fiberglass pen.

Wow the before and after difference is so stark it is like different watches altogether! And you claim you are “not a watchsmith”!!

I'm flattered. Maybe one day I'll finally get the courage to work on movement overhauls.

Once you have a few spare 2824/2836 parts or scrap movements its definitely worth a go. You already have a timegrapher so other than a few oils you’ve covered the main expense. Plus work out the number of 28xx based watches you have an multiply that by about $150 and all of a sudden you realise servicing your own stuff is the only way forward!

Great work on the sub though! For polishing hands i got an old piece of wood, drilled two very small holes (1mm and 2mm iirc) in in for the pinions to sit in and i use a polishing cloth with a touch of polinum on. One or two wipes across and they look like new. Just dont go mental, they’re brass underneath.

This weekend’s works.

This one needs a movement transplant. But I love it.

Got a Vietnam dial for my 9411 from yodog. He was too kind in sending me matching hands as a surprise.

Not bad.

End result. Had to take off the DWO so it would fit the VN date window.

Bought this gen TAG from a fellow member. The bezel needed to be repainted and the end links needed to be adjusted so they didn’t clink-clunk when they moved. Now they’re snug. I also added better fitting spring bars.

The bezel looks great! Care to share your technique for painting in the depressions?

Extremely simple. Black acrylic paint (quick dry, waterproof) and a fine paint brush. One depression at a time.

I try to remove the residue quickly before it dries since if you let it dry, when you remove the residue, it will take the paint in the numbers with it. One coat suffices.

Easy and very rewarding.
