When I started out down the road of tinkering on watches I was dumbfounded with sticker shock - the price of tools was seemingly out of control! Why would I pay $50 for a set of hand removers when they could be had for $12?
Well, after having started with cheap tools, I’ve pretty much replaced all of them. They have either broken, marked/marred parts, or simply aren’t precise enough to do a great job (yeah, yeah, I blame the tool).
So for what it’s worth, this is to say, bite the bullet and get the good goods. If you’re tinkering long enough, you’ll find it’s well worth it. Especially when you’ve paid for cheap stuff only to repay for expensive stuff.
My case and point, hand setters. For the longest time I was using the cheap $12 kit. It worked but often left residue on the hands or simply weren’t precise enough to set without a little bending. Nothing insurmountable as I could clean or tweak the hand. But I finally got a set of Horotec hand setters to work on gen watches. I can say with certainty, they make the job an absolute pleasure and are well worth the money.
For all you nerds out there, my new set:

I have horotec hand setting set and bergeon.

Bergeon beats horotec.

Just saying ;p

But you are right no cheap tools can replace quality tools. Done a lot movements now and I'm glad I invested in the right tools. Make my job quick, efficient and there is less risk that I'm going to f... Something.

Those parts are so delicate you want good tools to handle them.

Plus they will last so much longer in the end you will save .
