Clone 2824 stem fit for Asian 2836

Hi,

Long time lurker, this is my first contribution here, so please be gentle.

The other day I bought a brand new Asian 2836 clone from Rafflesdials along with some replacement stems for the 2824. I supposed these stems fit the movement.

To my great surprise, I was not able to push the 2824 stem all the way into the A2836 movement.

You can see some differences above. The 2836 stem that came with the movement does not have the collar indicated. This collar on the 2824 stem hits a ridge on the 2836 movement preventing it to go all the way in.

I have used my dremel tool as a makeshift lathe to machine down the collar of the stem and you can see the result above. After some work it fits now. Obviously I could have machined down the ridge on the movement, but I did not want to strip it down for that.

Perhaps someone can use this as a reference later on.

Question to more knowledgeable members out there: is this normal? I have only found references to the 2824 stem fitting the 2836. I know I'm dealing with clones here, and I was expecting all kind of obstacles TBH.

Nicely improvised and great pics. Thanks for sharing. I continue to be surprised at the variations between models and manufacturers, etc. We become modders out of necessity.

They are all interchangeable

I had the same impression before this adventure.
The 2824 clone stem is identical (except a rougher finish) to a genuine ETA.

Seems like my A2836 base plate is the culprit here.

Thanks, we should be fully furnished for that. :sport_boxing:

Great work on shaving the stem down! I was looking to buy a genuine breitling 2824 movement to fit into a replica submarimer which currently has an Asian 2836. I’m now questioning whether or not it would be a straight swap. Do any of you know if I could swap the movement round and use the 2836 stem and 2836 hands?

The hands have the same hole sizes between the 2836 and 2824. The stems are supposed to be interchangeable, but as the OP showed sometimes they are not, you may have to improvise. There is a also a stem height difference of about .4mm between the two, which depending on your case may make the swap not advisable without a different movement holder or spacer.

KJ2020 summed it up nicely. One thing to add: the stem came with my A2836 can be used in a genuine 2824, but not the other way around (see first picture). I'm still puzzled with this as they are supposed to be completely interchangeable, like the hands.
