I’ve gone for black but still tempted to change the order to blue. Am I right in thinking the black dial is closer to gem than the blue?

Black is a bit more gen like than blue. The royal blue color is harder to replicate

From pictures its hard to tell but if you have it in your hands and an older version side by side you see sometimes when they fuck up the brushing.
